Dr. Monte and Camilla (Mason) Grandgeorge were married on Sept. 2, 1967 in Fort Dodge and will be celebrating their 50th anniversary this year with a private family celebration. They will celebrate with their family, including Pete and Jenni Grandgeorge of Bondurant, Kurt and Claire Munson of Shell Rock, Neil Grandgeorge and Erica Madden of Muncy, Penn., along with their four grandchildren.

Roger and Linda Thompson were married on Oct. 8, 1967 and will celebrate their 50th anniversary this year. An open house is being held in their honor on Saturday, Sept. 9 at the Ledyard Community Hall from 1 – 4 p.m. Family and friends are also encouraged to shower them will cards to help them celebrate. Cards and well wishes will reach them at 104 Brewer Street, Lakota, IA 50451.

AHS looks to new changes

Students and teachers at Algona High School are noticing some significant changes this year in terms of scheduling. 
For the last couple of years, ongoing discussions were held to determine how to best increase the quality of education and student retention by engaging them in the learning process and making connections between content areas. 

Celebrating milestones at the Kossuth County Historical Museum

ALGONA — The Kossuth County Historical Society celebrated two major milestones on Friday, Aug. 25 with an Algona Area Chamber of Commerce coffee and open house. 
This year marks the building’s 150th anniversary and the 50th year of the Kossuth County Historical Museum. 
People filtered through the museum throughout the day, browsing artifacts and enjoying refreshments and birthday cake. 

Stopgap measure short-term solution to health care crisis

ALGONA — Health care experts in Kossuth County will agree that the stopgap measure that was submitted for federal approval is a short-term solution. They also will tell you that something needs to be done to assist individuals so they can continue to have health care.

Chris and Tara Brown of Algona along with Cory and Kristen Schattschneider of Ankeny and Mark and Angie Thill of Linn Creek, Mo., are pleased to announcement the engagement of their children, Bergen Brown and Joe Schattschneider, both of Des Moines. 
Bergen is a graduate of Algona High school and Iowa State University where she received her B.S. in Nutritional Science. Currently, Bergen is a Medical Scribe.

Senator visits KOFAB

Sen. Chuck Grassley continues to fulfill his promise of visiting community members within each of Iowa’s 99 counties every year, making a stop in Kossuth County on Monday morning. 
Community members gathered at the KOFAB plant, a division of PPI, around 9:30 a.m. to meet with the senator. After a brief tour of the plant, employees and other attendees sat down for a question and answer session, broaching those topics that were on their minds and for some, on their hearts. 

Finding crop storage space

GALBRAITH — Just south of this unincorporated town with Five Star Co-op located in it, Dean Berte has built another grain bin on his farm. He built it because he needs more storage space for his crops.
“The challenge is having good storage for the crops and getting the crops sold,” he said. “Sometimes the prices don’t get high, but you still have to move the grain sometime. I like to be empty before summer comes around.”

Baton Twirling Unlimited going back to its roots

Driven by an inner love of twirling, Janet Berte has transformed her favorite childhood pastime into a teaching opportunity and business for 30 years. 
This milestone is accompanied by a few changes in Berte’s business. Formally known as Janet’s School of Baton and Dance, Berte will teach under a new name, Baton Twirling Unlimited.

Gloria Seefeld was born on August 16, 1942 and will be celebrating her 75th birthday this year. She will be celebrating privately with her family, including Lisa of Mason City, Carl (Michele)  along with her grandkids, Emily of Los Angeles and Isaac of Cedar Falls and her grand-dogs, Frannie and Judah.

Rich and Mary Beth Hanson of Algona are pleased to announce the engagement and upcoming wedding of their daughter, Amanda Hanson, to Jason Gustafson, son of Randy and Carla Gustafson of Laurens.
Amanda is a 2009 graduate of Algona High School and a 2011 graduate of North Iowa Area Community College. Amanda owns and operates her own in-home day care, Amanda’s Childcare, in Laurens.

Bub’s Pie Shop is open for business

The long awaited day for many Algona pie lovers has arrived. Bub’s Pie Shop officially opened its doors to hungry customers on Wednesday, Aug. 9.
From the moment customers enter the building, they enter into a world of creativity and design by Bridget Bode from the décor to the food.
Growing up in Algona, Bode went off to pursue a degree in landscaping architecture and eventually found herself in Chicago. 

KFC sold to ZAK Family Foods

It is official. Kentucky Fried Chicken and Long John Silvers in Algona is under new ownership. Bright and early on Wednesday morning, Aug. 9, Jason Zakaras, owner of ZAK Family Foods took over the fast food establishment with a vision of creating a family atmosphere, great quality food and service.
