At least 15-20 people spent the weekend at The Quilted Steeple northwest of Algona preparing quilts for veterans through the Quilts of Valor program.
“This is just awesome to know that a veteran will receive a quilt,” Linda Hurlburt said. “We cover everybody with love with these quilts.” 
Two of the quilts were given to veterans on Sunday. One went to Korean War veteran, Curtis Gardner, the other to World War II veteran, Dr. William Clegg.

LONE ROCK — More than 130 seats were set up in Lone Rock American Legion for Kim Fischer’s cancer benefit. For the first hour or so the seats were filled and people were hovering over tables along the walls to checking out the more than 100 silent auction items.
“It was a good turnout. There was a large crowd and a lot of volunteers,” said Jarrod Fischer, whose mother Kim, is battling Stage 3 Lymphoma. “Everybody in Lone Rock comes together. They help out.”

ALGONA — The day that many arts lovers have been dreaming about is one day away. On Friday, Jan. 13, a ribbon cutting ceremony will be held at 9:30 a.m., at the Ed and Betty Wilcox Performing Arts Center to officially open the facility.

LONE ROCK — It was almost four months ago when Kim Fischer was diagnosed with Stage 3 lymphoma. On Jan. 8, the community is rallying around Fischer to help her pay for her medical bills with a ‘Benefit for Kim Fischer’ event.
“This is all overwhelming,” said her son, Jarrod Fischer. “My mom has been on the ambulance for many years. She loves taking care of people. The ambulance wants to give something to her to help her out.”

ALGONA — When Jerri Sadler moved her Edward Jones office to Highway 18 she was thinking about the visibility factor.
“I like the fact that it is on the highway,” she said. “It is easy to find, there is plenty of parking and lots of office space.”
Sadler has been working with Edward Jones for over a year. She moved the office to the Eastland Hill Plaza in November. On Friday, at 9:30 a.m., the Algona Area Chamber of Commerce will be sponsoring a ribbon cutting.

ALGONA — A couple of years ago, Ed and Betty Wilcox remember sitting down and talking to their CPA at the time — Jim Voigt — just thinking about what they could do to give back to the community.
After a few phone calls and visits, Voigt set them up with a meeting with Algona School District School Superintendent Marty Fonley. The result the beginning of what will become the Ed and Betty Wilcox Performing Arts Center.

TITONKA — One man has died in a house fire on Tuesday, Dec. 27.
The fire claimed the life of Daniel William Planz, 59, according to a Kossuth County Sheriff’s office press release. The fire was reported at 7:34 p.m. Due to the death in the fire, the Iowa Fire Marshal’s office has responded and the incident is under investigation, according to the press release.

Sam Norland and Annie Berkland of West Bend are the proud parents of a baby girl, Charlotte Maria, born Wednesday, Dec. 14, at Kossuth Regional Health Center. 
Maternal grandparents are Jeanne and Jesse Berkland of Algona. Paternal grandparents are Margaret and Dale Norland of Algona.

Martin and Kristen (Matthews) Peterson were married on December 24, 1966, at the Flatbush Dutch Reform Church in Saugerties, New York.
The couple resided in Iowa City and Atlantic before settling in Algona.

Friday morning’s snowstorm caused several accidents in Kossuth County. One major accident near Burt found seven passengers transported to area health facilities.
Kossuth County Emergency Management Coordinator Dave Penton said during a 4-5 hour period Friday morning there was winter driving conditions with heavy and mushy snow. “It was difficult travel,” he said.
There were several accidents around the county because of the weather and the slippery conditions.
