County Fair royal 'family' crowned

In the democracy of the United States, little room is left for the suggestion of a royal family. Dreams of girls everywhere are not dashed as a new royal family of sorts has been crowned at the Kossuth County Fair.

Museum raising funds for foundation

The race is on to find enough funding to remove and replace the crumbling foundation of the Kossuth County Historical Museum located at 122 South Dodge Street.
Since 2012, the Kossuth County Historical Society has been working to raise funds for this project. Shortly after the initial campaign began in 2012, it became obvious to members that enough funds could not be raised at that time, mentioned Amy Frankl-Brandt, Historical Society president. 

Saluting emergency management personnel

Inspired by a need to acknowledge and recognize those individuals who serve behind the scenes in emergency situations, Steve Smith, Algona Fareway market manager, decided to honor first responders in a special way on Thursday, July 27. 

‘This is what rural Iowa is all about’

For the past six years, the “Hunting With Heroes” group from the Lakota area has inviting war veterans from the Iraq and Afghanistan wars to come to hunt pheasants in November for a weekend of healing in the field and a big banquet at the old school on Saturday evening.

David and Beverly Berkland were married on August 1, 1952 at the farm home Beverly’s parents, Alvin and Luella Potratz. The couple will be celebrating their 65th anniversary this year. Katie Omdahl and Steven Tzimas of Windsor, Ontario, said “I do” surrounded by their closest family at Pique Travel, a quaint, rustic travel agency turned event center in Excelsior, Minn., on May 20, 2017 with the Rev. Kaitlyn Foster officiating. 
The celebration continued well into the evening with a few close friends and extended family of the couple.

RAGBRAI comes to Algona

ALGONA — RAGBRAI riders and crews left their mark on Algona on Monday, July 24 as the town slowly began to fill up with trucks, trailers, food stands and bike shops throughout the day. Banners were hung, camels set out and streets blocked off in anticipation for the some odd 10,000 official riders to arrive. Despite the official figures, many estimate the numbers to be twice that much when considering support crews and nonregistered riders.

‘The Last Indian Battle in Iowa’ memorialized forever

BURT — On a tract of farmland just southeast of Burt lays the site of “The Last Indian Battle in Iowa.” This little known fact was resurfaced by two individuals, Brian Mallia who researched the battle, placing a map at the Patterson Recreation Area and earning the title of eagle scout and Midge Andreasen who after reading about the battle, set about informing her fellow Daughters of the American Revolution members and memorializing this event.

Breakfast and Business - K/PACEDC style

Conversing between bites of food, businesspeople and leaders from across the county and state came together early in the morning on Wednesday, July 19 for the Kossuth/Palo Alto County Economic Development Corporation annual countywide breakfast.
Marked with the theme “Collaborate: Building the Bridge Together,” over 150 breakfast goers learned about a winning business trifecta from Travis Toliver.

Youth help 6 veterans attend honor flight

ALGONA — Six veterans will be able to participate in the Brushy Creek Area Honor Flight later this year because of the work a group of Algona sixth-graders did to raise money for the veterans.
