School Board hires Grundmeyer for superintendent search

The Algona School Board unanimously voted on Monday night, Dec. 10, to hire Grundmeyer Leader Services, LLC, of Ankeny to conduct the superintendent search for the Algona Community School District. Board members discussed their stance on selecting Grundmeyer.

Providing enjoyable Christmas for community members

The Trinity Lutheran Quilters and the C.A.R.E. Team paired up for the sixth year for a night to make Christmas better for children in the community.... Barb Bitterman, organizer, helped start the giveaway night to ensure children in the community have something for Christmas.

Kids program about more than just reading

Not only are children learning about reading, they are also gathering social skills and having fun in the Reading Adventures program at Titonka Public Library.

AHS dancers get Division I ratings

The Algona High School dance team traveled to Des Moines Wednesday, Nov. 28 to compete at the Iowa State Dance Competition on Thursday, Dec. 29. The dance team started preparing for the state competition in October, and members wanted to do their best at state.

BGHS wins 2 titles at state dance

The Bishop Garrigan Dance Team won two state titles at the 2018-19 Iowa State Dance Championships. The competition was held in Des Moines on Thursday and Friday, Nov. 29-30.

Cullen talks about rural Iowa in book-promoting Algona stop

2017 Pulitzer Prize winner Art Cullen gave a talk on the recent release of his first book, "Storm Lake," on Friday evening, Dec. 7, where he started his career, Algona Publishing.
"It's been really gratifying in Iowa. The book is becoming a part of the Iowa conversation," Cullen said.

Cub Scout pack 29 receives prestigious award

The William T. Hornaday award is a prestigious honor given out rarely each year. Cub Scout Pack 29, consisting of 50 youth from Algona, Titonka and West Bend, received a unit-level award certificate during a presentation at Water's Edge Nature Center on Sunday, Dec. 8.

Kicking off a musical on a Steinway piano

Glen Henricksen is excited about performing with the Cornbelt Chorus and the choral groups from Bishop Garrigan and Algona high schools at the Wilcox Performing Arts Center on Sunday, Dec. 16 at 3 p.m.
Henricksen will perform classical and some original Christmas selections on a Steinway piano to kick off the concert.

Wind project permit issued in Kossuth County

The first wind energy conversion system (WECS) permit under the new Kossuth County ordinance has been approved.
The Kossuth County Board of Supervisors made the decision after reviewing the final development plan for the Golden Plains Wind Farm project at its Dec. 11 board meeting.
