The superintendent search has been narrowed down to three candidates.
On Feb. 7, the Algona Commuity School Board and search consultant firm Grundmeyer Leader Search met in closed session to electronically screen eight simifinalists. The board spent 25 minutes with each candidate, asking questions about skills, qualifications and experiences.

Preventative medicine saved Gabrielsen's life at least twice

A retired KOFAB (now Precision Incorporated) employee who lives in Britt has nothing but good things to say about the Kossuth Regional Health Center population health program.

Algona receives Healthy Hometown award

Algona received the Healthy Hometown Community award from the Healthiest State Initiative (HSI) Feb. 7 in Des Moines. The annual award were presented at Hy-Vee's Ron Pearson Center. HSI is a nonprofit organization with the goal to make Iowa the healthiest state in the nation.

Her world expands with FFA visit to South Africa

A young Algona woman's first trip out of the country included a 14-hour flight to Johannesburg, South Africa, and provided a life-changing view of the world.
Alexis Berte, 19, the daughter of Pat and Nancy Berte, participated in the International Leadership Seminar for state FFA officers, a 12-day trip that consisted of agricultural and cultural experiences.

Emerging Leader Schulte manages 4.5 million hens, 80 employees

The Iowa Poultry Association announced Jan. 18 the names of participants in its 2019 Emerging Leader program. Among them was Colleen Schulte with the Center Fresh Group office in Corwith. The leadership program ... aims to offer "a blend of industry networking and educational events targeted specifically to the emerging leader group."

The teachers and administrators of Bertha Godfrey and Bryant elementary schools are challenging students to read more in the next three weeks.

'No validity' on conflict of interest letter

Despite no action on a letter alleging a conflict of interest with Supervisor Roger Tjarks on the wind energy conversion system, Supervisor Kyle Stecker would like the wind ordinance to be discussed further because of constituent concerns.
After a closed session during the Feb. 5 meeting, Chair Jack Plathe said, "Per our attorney's explanation, he informs us there is no validity to the Phil Kaplan letter and that no further action was required on it."

Algona School Board members approved an early retirement option for qualified teachers to use this school year.

Celebrating Catholic schools week

Catholic Schools week was all about celebrating. Jan. 28-Feb. 1 Bishop Garrigan and Seton Elementary celebrated the week. Three of the five days were cancelled because of the weather, but the students still had fun. Some of the activites were bowling, ice fishing, snowshoeing and playing on the big inflatables.
