Tower to be built in Wesley

A tower will be constructed in Wesley to place first responders on the same frequency and provide the city of Wesley funds over a 25-year period.
The Wesley City Council held a public hearing Jan. 23 at the community center to discuss the project. The council voted unanimously to sign a new lease agreement with FTC Tower Co. to build the 195-foot tall tower in a 100-by100-square-foot lease area west of the old school building.

Young artisans class for all

Jackie Terhark offers fine arts classes for students third grade through high school, along with adult classes.
Her Young Artisans classes include painting in acrylic and oils, drawing with graphite, and printmaking. They exclude sculpture. Classes run from January into the spring.

County Attorney: no conflict of interest in WECS

In the opinion of Kossuth County Attorney Todd Holmes, a letter submitted to the Kossuth County Board of Supervisors doesn't change his opinion that Supervisor Roger Tjarks has no conflict of interest regarding the wind energy conversion system (WECS).

Finding 40 potential water quality projects in county

A new water quality program is proposed that would impact Kossuth County as well as Palo Alto, Clay and Pocahontas counties.
The Kossuth County Board of Supervisors agreed to support a joint venture to improve water quality in drainage districts in Kossuth County. The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship funds the study.

Algona PD body camera policy approved through council

Algona City Council members approved the update of a police department policy Jan. 21 that police have followed more than a year in the use of body cameras.
The policy, in a nutshell, states that patrol officers issued body cameras are expected to retrieve them at the beginning of their shifts, activate them before most calls, and put them back into charging stations at end of their shifts.

Swea City library about more than just books

Over the more than 10 years Angie Moore has served as library director at the Swea City Public Library, she has seen her children's programs increase from five to 60 participants and a 5-minute program turn into an all day reading adventure.
"When I first started I called it Five Minute Library. I would see peole come in, they would grab a book and would leave right away," she said.

Library hub of Fenton Community

The Fenton Public Library is utilizing creative ideas to attract more people through its doors.
In August, Library Director Michele Espe started a forum series bringing folks who come from the immediate area in to talk to those at the library. It continued into 2019. In January, Bill Newbrough was the guest speaker. He talked about his experiences in Laos.

'Tapestry, the Carole King Songbook' at the PAC

Next up on the Kossuth County Concert Association's playlist: "Tapestry, the Carole King Songbook." It stars the acclaimed pianist and vocalist, Suzanne O. Davis.
Davis, from Ontario, Canada, will perform a musical tribute to Carole King at the Ed and Betty Wilcox Performing Arts Center Saturday, Feb. 9 at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Landowner disputes possible annexation into different drainage district

Doug Nelson doesn't think 40 acres of his land should be annexed into Drainage District No. 84. And, he believes he has shown proof the water does not surface-drain like engineering firm of Kent Rode, Bolton and Menk implies.
At three separate meetings Nelson showed the Kossuth County Board of Supervisors maps, photos, a tile map, and live video to prove his point.

letter asks board to repeal wind and tax ordinances

A letter submitted to the Kossuth County Board of Supervisors claims the county's wind energy conversion system is invalid due to the conflict of interest of Roger Tjarks, who will cast the deciding vote.
The letter also states Kossuth County Ordinance No. 207 should be repealed.
