Catholic Schools week was all about celebrating. Jan. 28-Feb. 1 Bishop Garrigan and Seton Elementary celebrated the week. Three of the five days were cancelled because of the weather, but the students still had fun. Some of the activites were bowling, ice fishing, snowshoeing and playing on the big inflatables.

CREP is a partnership with the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and Soil and Water Conservation districts to provide incentives to landowners who voluntarily establish wetlands for water quality improvement.

The Algona City Council approved the three-stall hangar extension and approach-paving project for the Algona Municipal Airport on Monday, Feb. 4.
The council opened up the floor for a public hearing prior to the approval of the project. No one spoke in approval or opposition to the project.

Nine students from the Algona High School band participated in the North Central Iowa Bandmasters Association District Honor Band Festival.
The event was held at the Iowa Central Community College campus in Fort Dodge. The students did a chair audition, which is an audition for rank. The audition determined what number rank the students were in the instrument section.

Chuck Stetzel was never sick of his job – even up to the final day.
Stetzel retired in January as a city mail carrier for the Algona Post Office. He started in February 1982.

Elements tested Kossuth County residents and those who handle weather-related procedures Monday, Jan. 28, as a snowstorm blew through Sunday night and early Monday.
The city of Algona issued a snow emergency which began at 6 p.m., Monday, Jan. 28 until noon on Wednesday, Jan. 30. The Kossuth County Sheriff's Office issued a tow ban because of the delayed warning from officials.

It continues to be a waiting game for Kossuth County's mental health and disability services program.
The Kossuth County Board of Supervisors called a special meeting at 2 p.m., Jan. 23 to build a plan to submit to the state Department of Human Services (DHS). The meeting coincided with an earlier meeting of the County Social Services Board of Directors.

The Good Samaritan Society and Sanford Health have merged. The merger took place Jan. 1.
"This day and age in health care, and reallly any business, it is about being able to provide more services more efficiently and more effectively," said John Kern, Good Samaritan Society-Algona administrator.

Helping farmers switch to a positive attitude could be considered one theme of this year's speakers at the Ag Education Day.
Tom Erickson, Kossuth/Palo Alto County Economic Development Corporation, Ag chair, said he is hopeful this year's group of speakers will give farmers a positive attitude toward raising and selling their crops instead of the negative attitude he sees in many of them now.
