Algona city council approves loans

Monday, Nov. 19, the city council approved a pair of $10,000 loan agreements.
One was with Walker Chiropractic and Wellness and the other with Thistle Do/Cultivate Boutique.

More than $42,000 raised for food drive

Danny and Cheryl Fouarge, owners of the Chrome Restaurant, have run the annual Stuff the Trailer Food Drive at the high traffic intersection in their parking lot for 18 years. People drop of donations in food or cash donation to contribute to the Kossuth County Food Pantry. This year, the food drive raised $42,693 and collected 16,134 pounds of groceries.

Providing for those who are less fortunate at Christmas

ALGONA — Tacos for Tots is a fundraiser put on by the C.A.R.E. Team of Algona to provide Christmas for those who are less fortunate.
The C.A.R.E. team collects donations and things from the community to help the families. The event will be held at the First United Methodist Church on Monday, Nov. 26 from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The annual Live Greeting Card Holiday Windows event is a “good old-fashioned holiday kick off,” in the words of Vicki Mallory, executive director of the Algona Area Chamber of Commerce.

City seeks info on retail's future

ALGONA — Community Development Director Jacob Tjaden is gathering downtown businesses together for a retail development meeting to build on the partnership that already exists, gather input on its strengths and weaknesses, and identify common goals.
“Part of my position and long term success of Algona is supporting, retaining, expanding existing businesses as well as attracting new businesses to either expand, relocate or open a new store here,” Tjaden said.

Several letters sent to supervisors on wind farm

Not everyone at the public informaiton meeting Nov. 13 in Lakota found a northern Kossuth County wind turbine project beneficial to their communities.
Several letters were sent to the Kossuth County Board of Supervisors detailing issues with EDF Renewable Development Inc.'s wind farm in Hebron, Lincoln and German townships.

Critical thinking at BGMS

ALGONA — Mary Foth teaches sixth grade STEM Science and STEM Math at Bishop Garrigan. For Foth, STEM teaches students how to think.
It teaches students “critical thinking, problem solving, getting along with others and technology. In problem solving, if kids just want an answer, it’s not going to be there. That’s STEM’s real strength,” Foth said. “If they make a mistake, good. What did they learn from it?” she asked.

Teamwork emphasis in Algona

ALGONA — Algona Middle School’s (AMS) STEM program helps students think of different ways to problem solve, science and math-related or not.
Students in the seventh grade Robotics course build a robot and are challenged to have it do different movements and tasks. Seventh grade student Sydney Seebecker said if something isn’t working with her STEM robotic project, she tries something else.

Robots come alive at West Bend

WEST BEND — It wouldn’t be surprising to see a robot in the West Bend school building during a school day.
Since school started, at least 20-25 youth have been building robots and learning about robotics in the West Bend-Mallard School District STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) program.

SWEA CITY — The North Kossuth Middle School may not have a STEM program, but students are gathering all the science, technology, engineering and math possible through hands-on experiences.
“I feel our kids are getting it. They’re understanding it,” said Sandy Tigges who, along with Ryan Rozeboom, teaches sixth to eighth grade science classes. “I have one kid that hates science.

Hoenk foundation gives and grows

For more than three decades, the Howard and Katherine Hoenk Foundation has provided financial support to local college students studying agriculture, medicine, nursing, veterinary medicine and related fields. In recent years, the foundation passed a milestone, giving away more money than the amount with which the foundation was originally seeded, while still growing.

Algona okays airport engineering services agreement

ALGONA — Algona City Council approved the resolution for the engineering service agreement with Clapsaddle-Garber Associates (CGA) for land acquisition on Monday, Nov. 5. A 240-foot long parcel of land on the norhtside of the airport’s runway near U.S. Highway 18 was determined to be an obstruction.

Holidazzle for Bancroft baseball

Bancroft Holidazzle is Saturday, Dec. 2 at the Main Street Pub and Grill in Bancroft. The annual event raises funds for Bancroft Memorial Park. The ball park celebrated it’s 70th anniversary this year.... Organizers invite the public to participate by decorating a tree for the Stroll through Winter Wonderland of Trees.

Algona Middle School sends 16 to Honor Choir

Marisa Merkel, Algona Middle School choir teacher, took a select group of 16 singers from her honor choir to North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) for Iowa Choral Directors' North Central 7-12 Honor Choir Festival. “They are excited to go sing with a bunch students from this part of Iowa,” Merkel said.

A harvesting video for the youth

SOUTH OF TITONKA — Jeff Schutjer, Kossuth County Farm Bureau president, was in the middle of harvesting beans last week. He was also in the middle of shooting a video that youth in Kossuth County could use to see what it is like harvesting the crop.
