The Lone Rock quasquicentennial will be celebrated the weekend of Aug. 24-25, 2024.
There is a meeting Thursday, June 20 at 7 p.m. at the fire stattion for anyone wishing to help with the quasquicentennial planning.

Veterans Park Speedway hoster quarter scale, radio controlled cars on June 8. The event was put on by Interstate Racing Association and included 32 drivers fro seven states with 40 cars total and four divisions.
According to Donelle Bradford, one of the event organizers, the drivers came from Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky and Iowa.

The Bishop Garrigan Quiz Bowl team made its 20th trip to the National Academic Championships. The team competed June 7-11 in Chicago. Senior Logan Heying served as captain of the Golden Bear team.
Also competing were seniors Sami Darling, Bryce Capesius and Gabe Trainer; junior Grant Bormann; and sophomores Abbi Heying and Aric Laubenthal.

As many as 40 educators from Kossuth County and other area schools participated in a two-day professional development program through North Central Iowa Ag in the Classroom (NCI AITC)
"They love this professional development," said Brenda Mormann, NCI AITC program director. "They get credit for this. Here they are experiencing and talking to people in the ag industry and seeing how things work."

Shara Long started Exercise from the Heart to help friends and community members with unforseen medical expenses.
In May, Long exercised for Terri Doocy and Laurie Meyer, sisters both suffering from polycystic kidney disease which can lead to kidney failure, and Stacy Besch, who is facing a medical mystery.

A new city parking lot opened next to Threads, but it's not your average parking lot. This parking lot is intended to store storm water and slowly release it.
According to grant writer and water quality specialist Staci Williams, this is how the parking lot works: it absorbs water through permeable pavers which are brick-looking pavers engineered to take on large amounts of water.

After a daylong visit in Algona, Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig summed up agriculture in and around the community.

As the new chief executive officer-elect of Nationwide, Kirt Walker's course was charted after witnessing the devastation from a tornado that rocked Algona on June 28, 1979.

Saturday, the Algona Morwens Kiwanis held its annual fishing derby while the Rotary Club put on the annual Bike Ride Around Kossuth County (BRAK) and the Algona Area Chamber of Commerce held its new Carnival at the Corners.
The fishing derby took place at Smith Lake from 9 to 11 a.m. while BRAK began around 8 a.m. from the Algona Family YMCA and the Carnival at the Corners began at 11 a.m. and went on until 4 p.m.

If Maxine Platt hadn't brought a bowl of potato salad over to a Memorial Day luncheon with Gloria Seefeld (who lives across the hall in their apartment complex) she may have never found out more about her brother-in-law's injuries during World War II.
Seefeld and her daughter Lisa Hackman had planned on attending Memorial Day services with Lisa's best friend, Bonnie Long Hahn, who was coming from St. Peter, Minn.

Sbemco hosted the Algona Chamber of Commerce Coffee on Friday, June 7. The chamber coffee allowed community members to stop in and have a coffee with president of the company, Brian Buscher.

It's up to Ron Covert, Algona public works director, and Kurt Nielson, Algona street superintendent, to fill the potholes and repair the streets of Algona.
The city began filling potholes last Monday and Tuesday, going through 55 tons of asphalt. Although, as of last week, that was all they were able to do as the city was unable to purchase more asphalt.

During the celebration of the company's new name, Corteva Agriscience Production Location Manager Greg Wilson made a point to recognize all the employees who have put in the work over the past two years to make the merger possible.
On June 1, the completed merger with Dow and DuPont, Pioneer became Corteva Agriscience. A ceremony was held at the facility at the intersection of highways 169 and 18 in Algona.

Members of Team Dumstorff were busy on Saturday, June 8, at Hager Foods in Bancroft feeding people with its annual pork burger meal to raise money for the American Cancer Society.
Alice Dumstorff, involved with the team for 13 years, said she hopes they are able to raise $1,000.
