North Union Elementary in Fenton celebrated March Reading Month with activities every day. March.
March 4 was Dr. Seuss Day, and students dressed up as characters from their favorite books, received tattoos and bookmarks and enjoyed green eggs and ham in fourth grade along with reading time.

The city of Algona's revamped revolving loan fund (RLF) is another tool to assist retail businesses in the community.
The retail portion of the RLF has repayment terms up to five years at 0 to 5 percent interest, based on need. Traditionally, loans have been at or near 0 percent.

Kossuth Regional Health Center (KRHC) honored an outstanding nurse as part of the organization's national Hospital Week in May.
Salena Siefken, R.N. and certified lactation counselor, was chosen as the 2019 Daisy award winner. Siefken works in KRHC Community Health with the Kossuth Growing Healthy Kids program.

Cole Louscher received his Eagle Scout award during a ceremony at First United Methodist Church on Sunday, May 5.
Louscher, with assistance from Troop 71, built wagon wheel benches that will be displayed during the Kossuth County Fair.

The Kossuth County Advance today honors area high school seniors who, over their high school careers, have been a positive force for their schools and their communities. The Academic All-Star award recognizes students for qualities beyond their grade point averages. Students are chosen based on a combination of nonschool achievements, volunteer work and employment, as well as curricular and extracurricular activities.

When Bryce Capesius receives his diploma during Bishop Garrigan High School graduation on Sunday, May 12, many emotions will run through his mind.
Among them, he said, is the very opportunity to attend graduation after he was diagnosed with a cancerous brain tumor when he was a ninth grader.

A Friday afternoon groundbreaking ceremony signified the start of the Bishop Garrigan chapel project.
Bishop Garrigan students, as well as priests, sisters, deacons and special guests, gathered around the site on the northwest portion of the Garrigan grounds for a ceremony. Nearly a dozen people had a role in the ceremony, and younger students participated by dumping small packets of dirt they had gathered from their homes.

Author Gail Kittleson has written several books in her Women of the Heartland series featuring women who made a contribution to World War II despite obstacles in their lives. Her latest book, "All for the Cause" was written because she had never heard about the Algona POW camp and had a desire to write about it.

Algona Community Development Director Jacob Tjaden hopes to attract more housing opportunities in order to spur local economic growth.
Tjaden believes housing is a significant challenge in workforce retention and sees that as a statewide phenomenon rather than just a local issue.

Every year, Honor Flights give wartime veterans the opportunity to fly to Washington, D.C., for a day to experience the monuments and memorials. This tradition began with a physician's assistant taking his father to see the World War II Memorial.

Local cancer survivors and their caregivers will take the celebratory first lap at the annul American Cancer Society Relay for Life of Kossuth event on June 14 at the Kossuth County Fairgrounds.
The survivors lap begins around 6 p.m. Anyone diagnosed with cancer and his or her caregivers are encouraged to join the celebration.

Algona High School graduation is Sunday, May 19. A total of 98 students will walk across the stage that day.
On May 9, the school has College Decision day. It is a time when the seniors wear college apparel from where they are planning to go next fall.
