What you might not know about RAGBRAI

You have probably heard the acronym RAGBRAI a lot lately. In fact, so much so that it might seem like RAGBRAI is an actual word intrinsically tied to Algona.
In four days, Algona will be transformed into an overnight stop for thousands of cyclists. It will be a place where riders can rest and refresh themselves and where the entire community can gather together for 13 hours of entertainment, food, fun and fellowship.

60th anniversary

Ron is a retired cattle buyer with IBP and Georgina owned and operated Merle Norman Cosmetics in Algona for several years. The couple will be celebrating their milestone with a family dinner and get together. 65th anniversary

Delbert (Deb) and Elaine (Meyer) Wichtendahl were married on July 20, 1952 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. Their family, including their four children, Vern (Twila) of Lotts Creek, Rev. 18th Founders’ Day: Celebrating Algona’s Heritage

Most people in Algona have heard at one time or another the story of two brothers, Asa and Ambrose Call, who journeying across the state, began to build a town they would later call Algona. 
One hundred and sixty three years later, the city continues to remember its humble beginnings in a log cabin on July 10, 1854, with a huge four-day celebration.

Adaptive RAGBRAI Team riding

Nothing can stop them. Not blindness, paralyzation or an amputated limb. 
For the seventh year in a row, Adaptive Sports Iowa Cycling Team, presented by Iowa Farm Bureau, will be hitting the roadways to accomplish the task of cycling across the entire state of Iowa. 
This year, the 80-person team will be staying in the new gymnasium at Bishop Garrigan High School. 

Ag Learning Center renovated

ALGONA — The Ag Learning Center on the Kossuth County Fairgrounds has been renovated to make it a multi-use facility during the Kossuth County Fair.
This year’s event runs from July 30 through Aug. 5.
“We wanted to give back to the community and find a project with agriculture that everyone would enjoy,” said Cole Eden, president of the Algona High School FFA program.
The school FFA chapter funded the project through fundraisers.

Cattleman’s Association provide meals at ABATE

ALGONA — It is estimated that the Kossuth County Cattleman’s Association cooked more than 4,500 pieces of meat during the ABATE of Iowa Freedom Rally last week.
“We enjoy it out here,” said Ben Kramer, President of the Kossuth County Cattleman’s Association. “We are able to promote our product.”
The booth is a fundraiser for the Kossuth County Cattleman’s Association. The ABATE of Iowa Freedom Rally is a fundraiser for the ABATE group.

Cruise-In coming to the fairgrounds on Saturday

ALGONA — Downtown is not the place to see vintage cars and tractors at this year’s Founders’ Day. The Kossuth County Agriculture and Motorsports Museum on the fairgrounds is where all the vehicles will be parked.
The first Cruise-In will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., around the museum. It will include cars, tractors, motorcycles and race cars. The Kossuth County Cattleman’s Association will also be providing a meal for those interested in seeing the vintage vehicles.

‘Voices from the Past’ on Friday, July 7

“Voices from the Past” will take place in Riverview Cemetery on a new night and time this year, Friday, July 7, at 6:45 p.m.  Since 2012, this program has been a staple of Founders’ Day weekend. It is a joint production of the Kossuth County Genealogical Society and the Algona Branch-AAUW.  

A final celebration at St. Benedict Parish

The congregation was welcomed to the final Mass celebrated at St. Benedict Parish on Saturday, June 25, by hymns sung from the choir loft. Attendees were greeted by the pastor, Rev. Peter Nguyen and several former pastors as preparations were being completed.
The Mass was celebrated by Reverends Nguyen, Cecil Friedmann, Edward Girres and former pastors Doug Dandurand, James McAlgin and Randy Schon.

90th birthday
 
Butch Giesking was born on June 30, 1927 and will be celebrating his 90th birthday this year. His family, including Donavon, Bonnie, Jolene and Diane, are encouraging family and friends to attend the open house that is being held in his honor. The open house is on Sunday, July 9th from 2 – 4 p.m. at the Buffalo Creek Activity Center in Titonka, 543 Dieckman Street NE.
