The extremely cold conditions that Algona experienced last week increased activity for some businesses.

Algona loves bacon. That was made clear Saturday night.
The Algona Area Chamber of Commerce sold out its tickets for the third annual Achin' for Bacon event at the Algona VFW on Feb. 2.

'No validity' on conflict of interest letter

Despite no action on a letter alleging a conflict of interest with Supervisor Roger Tjarks on the wind energy conversion system, Supervisor Kyle Stecker would like the wind ordinance to be discussed further because of constituent concerns.
After a closed session during the Feb. 5 meeting, Chair Jack Plathe said, "Per our attorney's explanation, he informs us there is no validity to the Phil Kaplan letter and that no further action was required on it."

Nest step taken in superintendent search

Algona School Board members approved an early retirement option for qualified teachers to use this school year.
The action came during a special session of the board Thursday, Jan. 31.

Celebrating Catholic schools week

Catholic Schools week was all about celebrating. Jan. 28-Feb. 1 Bishop Garrigan and Seton Elementary celebrated the week. Three of the five days were cancelled because of the weather, but the students still had fun. Some of the activites were bowling, ice fishing, snowshoeing and playing on the big inflatables.

It is not unusual to see people cycling inside The Energy Spot in Carole Bernhard's studio outside of Bancroft.
"People like to cycle in Iowa," Bernhard said. "Cycling is a great non-impact way of getting and staying fit."

An avid pheasant hunter near Wesley has two pieces of land in the Iowa Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program (CREP).
CREP is a partnership with the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and Soil and Water Conservation districts to provide incentives to landowners who voluntarily establish wetlands for water quality improvement.

Council approves airport hangar project

The Algona City Council approved the three-stall hangar extension and approach-paving project for the Algona Municipal Airport on Monday, Feb. 4.
The council opened up the floor for a public hearing prior to the approval of the project. No one spoke in approval or opposition to the project.

9 AHS students participate in band festival

Nine students from the Algona High School band participated in the North Central Iowa Bandmasters Association District Honor Band Festival.
The event was held at the Iowa Central Community College campus in Fort Dodge. The students did a chair audition, which is an audition for rank. The audition determined what number rank the students were in the instrument section.

Stetzel retires after nearly 37 years

Chuck Stetzel was never sick of his job – even up to the final day.
Stetzel retired in January as a city mail carrier for the Algona Post Office. He started in February 1982.

Snow blows into county, temps plummet

Elements tested Kossuth County residents and those who handle weather-related procedures Monday, Jan. 28, as a snowstorm blew through Sunday night and early Monday.
The city of Algona issued a snow emergency which began at 6 p.m., Monday, Jan. 28 until noon on Wednesday, Jan. 30. The Kossuth County Sheriff's Office issued a tow ban because of the delayed warning from officials.

No decision on county mental health, disability services program

It continues to be a waiting game for Kossuth County's mental health and disability services program.
The Kossuth County Board of Supervisors called a special meeting at 2 p.m., Jan. 23 to build a plan to submit to the state Department of Human Services (DHS). The meeting coincided with an earlier meeting of the County Social Services Board of Directors.
