Tietz Park project discussed at session

The Tietz Park shelter house and restroom project will need to be built for less than proposed if it is to be approved by the city council.
During a work session on Monday, Feb. 18, the city council discussed with city staff the proposed budget of the shelter and bathrooms. City Administrator Curt Wiseman gave an estimate of around $475,000 for the scope of the project.

Property zoning change receives first hearing

The Algona city council held a public hearing for the change of a zoning property located at Casey and Spruce streets on Monday, Feb. 18.
The council approved the first reading of the ordinance following the hearing. The ordinance will change the zoning of the property from heavy manufacturing to light manufacturing.

Being a third-generation business for 60 years has its benefits for Schumacher Well Drilling in Algona.
“Keeping it going makes you feel proud, but yet it is kind of scary at the same time,” said Jeremy Walker, who along with Tammy Davis and Brandon Rowley, head the operations. “With the price of equipment and the price of everything increasing, we’re trying to keep things going.”

Merideth knew he wanted to be a dentist in middle school

Louscher Family Dental has added a new smile to its team.
Dr. Matthew Merideth joined Louscher Family Dental in July 2018 as a full-time associate general dentist. In May 2018, he finished graduate school in Portland, Maine, at the University of New England. Merideth completed his undergraduate studies as a Hawkeye at the University of Iowa. He is originally from Emmetsburg and works partially in the Louscher dentist office there/

Algona Comunity School Board members unanimously approved a settlement agreement with past elementary principal and claimant Stacy Mueller on Monday, Feb. 11.

The superintendent search has been narrowed down to three candidates.
On Feb. 7, the Algona Commuity School Board and search consultant firm Grundmeyer Leader Search met in closed session to electronically screen eight simifinalists. The board spent 25 minutes with each candidate, asking questions about skills, qualifications and experiences.

Preventative medicine saved Gabrielsen's life at least twice

A retired KOFAB (now Precision Incorporated) employee who lives in Britt has nothing but good things to say about the Kossuth Regional Health Center population health program.

Algona receives Healthy Hometown award

Algona received the Healthy Hometown Community award from the Healthiest State Initiative (HSI) Feb. 7 in Des Moines. The annual award were presented at Hy-Vee's Ron Pearson Center. HSI is a nonprofit organization with the goal to make Iowa the healthiest state in the nation.

Her world expands with FFA visit to South Africa

A young Algona woman's first trip out of the country included a 14-hour flight to Johannesburg, South Africa, and provided a life-changing view of the world.
Alexis Berte, 19, the daughter of Pat and Nancy Berte, participated in the International Leadership Seminar for state FFA officers, a 12-day trip that consisted of agricultural and cultural experiences.

Emerging Leader Schulte manages 4.5 million hens, 80 employees

The Iowa Poultry Association announced Jan. 18 the names of participants in its 2019 Emerging Leader program. Among them was Colleen Schulte with the Center Fresh Group office in Corwith. The leadership program ... aims to offer "a blend of industry networking and educational events targeted specifically to the emerging leader group."

The teachers and administrators of Bertha Godfrey and Bryant elementary schools are challenging students to read more in the next three weeks.
Brad Sudol, principal at Bryant and Bertha Godfrey, said the main goal of the February reading challenge is to promote literacy and have fun with reading .... The theme is camping.
