Something new at Relay for Life

To honor survivors and those Kossuth County has lost, there will be a Wall of Hope and a Wall of Honor at the Kossuth County Relay for LIfe.
Survivors are encouraged to submit a photo and 120 words of their journey to post on the Wall of Hope the night of the Relay. Any caregiver is welvome to post a photo on the Wall of Honor the night of the relay.

Angels among those at Relay for Life

For the past several years, the Whittemore Angels Among Us Relay for Life team has participated in the Kossuth County Relay for Life event. The group will continue to participate because it believes it is making a difference, and it is for a good cause.

Chamber rolls out first carnival at the corners

Those attending the Carnival at the Corners should expect plenty of entertainment.
"A lot of our events take place in the downtown area," said Algona Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Vicki Mallory. "The thought was to get a few new businesses involved with partnering with the chamber on doing some type of fun event that would draw people into town and hopefully the businesses can attract them to their stores."

Drainage dominates county board meeting

When the Kossuth County Board of Supervisors met May 21, drainage issues took over a large part of the discussion. A major discussion item stemmed from an issue with a drainage ditch shared between Iowa and Minnesota.
This ditch goes into Minnesota from Iowa and back into Iowa. Minnesota doesn't pay any tax on that drainage, and Jeff Eisenmann, Emily Eisenmann and Karen Farland all took issue with that.

Strohman honorary rider for BRAK

An avid bike rider, LeRoy Strohman has been named the honorary rider and starter for the fifth annual Bike Ride Around Kossuth County (BRAK) on Saturday, June 8. The Algona Rotary Club organizes the event.

Outdoor Cookin' with pie irons at the lake

Eat your dinner at Smith Lake on Friday, June 7, and learn to use pie irons as Kossuth County Conservation cooks up some pie iron pizzas and banana boats for dessert. The program begins at 5:30 p.m. and meets at the Smith Lake enclosed shelter house on the south side of the lake.

Kossuth SWCD poster contest winners

Life in the Soil: Dig Deeper was the theme of the 2019 poster contest sponsored by the Kossuth Soil and Water District.
Entries were submitted by elementary students from all over Kossuth County in three divisions. The winning entries now move on to state competition.

Small town church with big heart celebrates 100 years

Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Livermore, holds an annual summerfest. This year's will be a little different. the church is celebrating its 100th anniversary along with summerfest activities.
The 100th anniversary celebration is Sunday, June 9 in the area to the east of the church. Mass is at 10:30 a.m. Both pastors have been invited to participate in Mass and the celebration.

99 walk across the stage at AHS

Ninety-nine Algona High School seniors went into the AHS gymnasium Sunday, then 99 AHS graduates came out.
The commencement was nearly an hour and a half long. It featured tributes for honors students, silver cord recipients and recognition of those who were receiving scholarships from some of the over $650,000 available from the Algona Community Foundation. The two main speakers were Morgan Erpelding, AHS senior class president, and Rodney Davis, school board vice president.

Crusaders participating in Relay for Life

There may be two new co-chairs, but Iowa State Bank will still participate in the annual Kossuth County Relay for Life, something the employees have been doing since Relay for Life started.
Each quarter, ISB Community Crusaders support different charities in the area. This quarter, the group chose Relay for LIfe, which will be held from 5 to 10 p.m. on Friday, June 14 at the fairgrounds.

Eighth annual duck drop raises over $7,000

One thousand ducks go into the water, nine ducks come out of the water, only eight truly matter.
The Algona Morwens Kiwanis Club held its eighth annual Drop the Ducks event at the Algona Family YMCA. This year all 1,000 plastic ducks were dropped. More than 860 ducks were sold, raising $7,310.

Employees see wage increase

Employees in the Algona Community School District will see a 1.7 to 2 percent increase in their salaries in the next school year.
More than 100 certified teachers will see an $850 or 1.7 percent increase in the 2019 school year. Teacher assistants will see a 28 cent an hour increase or 2 percent in their base salaries. In addition, teacher assistants will see starting salaries raised 16 cents to $10.50 per hour.

Cornbelt Chorus named small chorus champs

The Cornbelt Chorus was named the 2019 Small Chorus Champion at the Central States District Barbershop Chorus Contest in Iowa City recently.
The chorus was also named the Plateau B Division Champions performing the songs, "Surfer Girl" and "Driving Me Crazy."

Vets and volunteers apprecitation event june 13

Northwest Iowa RSVP hosts veterans and volunteers at their annual appreciation event June 13 at the Algona campus Iowa Lakes Community College new addition. The event starts at 2 p.m.
RSVP volunteers and spouses as well as Kossuth County military veterans and spouses are invited to attend the ice cream social and bring potential volunteers as guests. The Algona campus is handicapped accessible.

Learning through trees for threes

An estimated 200 third-grade students from Kossuth County schools participated in the 2019 Trees for Threes program at Smith Lake on Arbor Day April 26.
The program is cosponsored each year by the Kossuth County Conservation Board and the Kossuth Soil and Water Conservation District.

The church is celebrating a birthday

There's a birthday party on the horizon! Easter will be over in a couple of weeks and then ... a birthday!
Maybe you thought Easter was over already, but the season of Easter is 50 days long, beginning on Easter Sunday and continuing for the next seven Sundays, ending (this year) on the second of June. So what comes next? The birthday of the church (also known as Pentecost) on June 9.
