Dog walk benefits cat shelter

Animal Rescue Family held a dog walk dubbed, the Wag the Dog 5K fun run and walk, Saturday to help pay for renovations, food, veterinary bills and to keep the shelter running.
"We want to fix up another room so we can have a decent intake room," Erin Schroeder, secretary at Animal Rescue Family said. "So, when we intake cats they're separated from the other animals in case they show signs of illness."

Man pronounced dead at construction site

Lee Gruver, age 51, of Daisetta, Texas, was pronounced dead at a construction site in rural Lakota, according to a Kossuth County Sheriff's Office press release.
On June 19, at approximately 2:20 p.m., the sheriff's office received a call requesting an ambulance at the construction site. Upon investigation, Gruver was pronounced dead. The investigation has been turned over to the Iowa State Patrol and Iowa Department of Transportation.

Touching the hearts of cancer victims

When she first started speaking, Sherri Beenken told everyone she would have a hard time getting through her talk at the Kossuth County Relay for LIfe. She also said she was going to make it through despite all the emotions that would build up tallking about her father, Ted Abbas, who has battled cancer for 17 years.
"His is treatable, not curable," she said.

Despite wet weather, almost all county crops planted

Dean Berte was in a field west of Whittemore side dressing with 32 percent nitrogen for almost 300 acres of Pioneer seed corn.
"The planting season was kind of tough this year because of all the rain," Berte said last week from inside his 2010 Case IH tractor as he was spreading the nitrogen on the field. "If you didn't have well-tiled ground and some pretty well-drained soils, it was pretty tough to get all the planting done."

Still looking for a mental health solution

At least four counties continue to try to form a new mental health region or at leat join the Northwest Iowa Care Connection group.
Representatives from Kossuth, Hancock, Winnebago and Worth counties had an informational meeting in Algona June 12. During the meeting, there were also phone conversations with two members of the state's Department of Health and Social Services.

Algona Chamber hosts party in the park

Next Wednesday, June 26, the Algona Area Chamber of Commerce is having a party on the Carnegie Library lawn at the corner of Nebraska and Dodge streets.
According to Algona Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Vicki Mallory, the event will take place from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. and will feature entertainment by Spenser Rahm. The theme is Down on the Farm.

Collections start for Project Hope June 24

The Kossuth/Palo Alto County Economic Development Corporation's interns are giving hope to local youth, teens and adults in need by collecting personal care items.
Project Hope runs June 24 to July 6. Collected items will be bagged and distributed to locations in the area. Items suggested for donation are combs, brushes, toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, bars of soap, body wash and razors. Travel-sized items are suggested.

Cancer golf tourney raises more than $2,500

The River Road Women's Golf Association held a best shot golf tournament Wednesday to raise money for the Kossuth County Cancer Support Foundation.
According to Fatima Schemmel, the event raised $2,545 and hosted 76 golfers. The nine holes all had sponsors who donated gifts to be given as prizes. There were also raffles for two quilts.

Walking for those battling Alzheimer's and dementia

Organizers feel that the second Algona Walks the Longest Day on June 21 will be a bigger event than the inaugural one in 2018.
This year's event starts at 5:30 p.m. at the Windsor Manor. It includes a walk on the paths around Windsor Manor and hot dogs and ice cream for a voluntary donation. There is also a drawing for a lap blanket, and T-shirts will be available.

Museum Week, Chamber Coffee coincide with stop at Kossuth County Historical Society

Last week was designated Iowa museum week by Governor Kim Reynolds, and the Kossuth County HIstorical Society celebrated by hosting the Algona American Legion on Wednesday and a donor appreciation day on Friday.
Friday, the Kossuth County Historical Society also hosted a chamber coffee, and the president of the historical society, Jan Ricke, spoke to the crowd. The hisorical society recently finished the renovation of its basement.

City council approves study, purchases land

The Algona City Council held an open work session Monday, June 17, preceding the regular council meeting.
During the work session, Kevin Graves, engineer for WHKS & Co., and Mike Bearden, executive vice president and aviation group manager for Clapsaddle-Garber Associates, presented. Graves was tasked with a nutrient reduction study, while Bearden informed the council about land acquisition near the Algona Municipal Airport.

Supervisors address wind, drainage issue

Tuesday, the Kossuth County Board of Supervisors had a visit from Jonathon Schroeder, an attorney with Davis Brown Law Firm in Ames. Schroeder is representing EDF Renewables.
EDF Renewables is constructing the Golden Plains Wind project. The issue involves permits to cross drainage tile to connect power to wind mills.

Lone Rock sets date for Quasquicentennial

The Lone Rock quasquicentennial will be celebrated the weekend of Aug. 24-25, 2024.
There is a meeting Thursday, June 20 at 7 p.m. at the fire stattion for anyone wishing to help with the quasquicentennial planning.

Quarter Scale Racing Event

Veterans Park Speedway hoster quarter scale, radio controlled cars on June 8. The event was put on by Interstate Racing Association and included 32 drivers fro seven states with 40 cars total and four divisions.
According to Donelle Bradford, one of the event organizers, the drivers came from Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky and Iowa.
