Sophomores discover for themselves the wonders of nature

A crisp autumn day, free from the inklings of rain made for the perfect environment for the sophomore students to partake in the fourth annual biology field day at the Wildhaven Campus on Thursday, Oct. 12. 

Painting Rocks to strengthen community

In an effort to bolster community while spreading joy and kindness, a new group was created called, Algona, Iowa Rocks. The mission, to spread a bit a cheer with hand painted rocks ranging from inspirational words to holiday designs. 
Each rock is hidden around town in the great outdoors or inside participating businesses. Passerbyers who find the earthen treasure can keep the rock, replacing it with their own creation or rehide it for the next person to find.

Lucille Faber was born Oct. 22, 1937 and will celebrate her 80th birthday this year. There will be an open house in her honor for family and friends to help her celebrate. The open house will be Saturday, Oct. 21 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Burt activity Center.

Youth charged with threat of terrorism

ALGONA — A 16-year-old Algona youth has been charged with an alleged threat of terrorism, for making an alleged threat of violence in a social media post last week.
The threat of terrorism is a Class D felony and carries with it the potential consequences of an indeterminate term not to exceed five years in prison and a maximum fine of $7,500.

Fundraiser underway to complete renovations

ALGONA — It is still possibly a year away, but when the Carnegie Centre for the Arts opens its doors the hope is that the facility will also open the creativity of the arts in Kossuth County.

Algona Radio moves to town

Hometown and Home Country Radio, KLGA and KLGZ, have officially moved its base of operation from West Hobarton to downtown Algona, broadcasting from Algona for the first time on Thursday, Oct. 5. 

TLC Quilters: Silent heroes spread love and comfort

ALGONA — Since 2010 the Trinity Lutheran Church Quilters have been sewing up a storm to provide those in need with the comfort of a warm handcrafted quilt, teddy bear, toy trucks, dolls and other items.

Emily Maureen van Oosbree and Nicholas James Webb were married on June 10, 2017, at the Clare and Miles Mill Rose Garden in Des Moines, with Phil Webb officiating the ceremony. 
Emily is the daughter of Dave and Kate van Oosbree of Emmetsburg. She graduated from Creighton Law School in 2012 and is currently Contracts Counsel for Workiva in Ames. 

69th Annual Band Day Festival

Strike up the bands once more, the 69th Annual Band Day Festival came to pass with melodious tunes and many colors as 16 bands gathered to march down State Street on Saturday, Sept. 30 for the Band Day Parade with 10 bands performing later on that evening on Bulldog Field for the field portion of the event. 

Boys scouts band together to help hurricane victims

The Algona Boy Scout Troop 71 and Cub Scout Pack 29 banded together, joining forces with Boy Scout Troops in Texas and Florida to collect and distribute supplies to victims of Hurricane Harvey and Irma.
It all started when Mandie Studer was browsing a 31 bags director’s page on Facebook and noticed the request of a fellow director in Seabrook, Texas, requesting help for her cub scouts who were gathering supplies for hurricane victims. 

On the Road to Victory: AHS Homecoming

The Algona High School Bulldogs were traveling on the Road to Victory during their 2017-18 Homecoming Week held on Sept. 24-29. 
The week was kicked off with students from each grade, gathering together to decorate the high school hallways for the fun-filled week of costumes, games and general Homecoming festivities.
Bringing home first place for the best-decorated hallway was the sophomore class with the seniors claiming the title of the best billboards.

Italian restaurant coming to Algona

ALGONA — After at least two years, the building that housed Bodacious and Godfathers Pizza will now house Napoli’s Italian Restaurant.
Tony Avdiu, who also owns Napoli’s Italian Restaurant in Fort Dodge, hopes to have the building open by Thanksgiving, if not earlier.
“This is going to be a new venture,” said Avdiu, who has owned the Fort Dodge location for the past year. “Algona needs an Italian restaurant. There is nothing here.”
