Weekend of events concludes

Saturday, the Algona Morwens Kiwanis held its annual fishing derby while the Rotary Club put on the annual Bike Ride Around Kossuth County (BRAK) and the Algona Area Chamber of Commerce held its new Carnival at the Corners.
The fishing derby took place at Smith Lake from 9 to 11 a.m. while BRAK began around 8 a.m. from the Algona Family YMCA and the Carnival at the Corners began at 11 a.m. and went on until 4 p.m.

Families awestruck by Memorial Day discussion

If Maxine Platt hadn't brought a bowl of potato salad over to a Memorial Day luncheon with Gloria Seefeld (who lives across the hall in their apartment complex) she may have never found out more about her brother-in-law's injuries during World War II.
Seefeld and her daughter Lisa Hackman had planned on attending Memorial Day services with Lisa's best friend, Bonnie Long Hahn, who was coming from St. Peter, Minn.

Sbemco celebrates 30 years

Sbemco hosted the Algona Chamber of Commerce Coffee on Friday, June 7. The chamber coffee allowed community members to stop in and have a coffee with president of the company, Brian Buscher.

City begins filling potholes

It's up to Ron Covert, Algona public works director, and Kurt Nielson, Algona street superintendent, to fill the potholes and repair the streets of Algona.
The city began filling potholes last Monday and Tuesday, going through 55 tons of asphalt. Although, as of last week, that was all they were able to do as the city was unable to purchase more asphalt.

Pioneer becomes Corteva Agriscience

During the celebration of the company's new name, Corteva Agriscience Production Location Manager Greg Wilson made a point to recognize all the employees who have put in the work over the past two years to make the merger possible.
On June 1, the completed merger with Dow and DuPont, Pioneer became Corteva Agriscience. A ceremony was held at the facility at the intersection of highways 169 and 18 in Algona.

Team dumstorff ready for 20th year

Members of Team Dumstorff were busy on Saturday, June 8, at Hager Foods in Bancroft feeding people with its annual pork burger meal to raise money for the American Cancer Society.
Alice Dumstorff, involved with the team for 13 years, said she hopes they are able to raise $1,000.

Fun at Blank Park Zoo

Lu Verne elementary students and staff traveled to the Blank Park Zoo in Des Moines. The children saw the animals up close and enjoyed the educational programs.

Algona Police: Lock your stuff

Two burglaries in Algona and another in the area in recent weeks prompted the Algona Police Department to put a message on Facebook last weekend. The message encouraged people to lock thier homes, garages and vehicles.

Patriotism on display

Thirteen veterans were remembered in a Roll Call of the Flags during Monday's Memorial Day service.
Kevin Molsbery of the Algona Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars post read the names, branch of service and the war in which they served. Local veterans responded by carrying a flag in rememberance of each one to a table, then saluted.

Something new at Relay for Life

To honor survivors and those Kossuth County has lost, there will be a Wall of Hope and a Wall of Honor at the Kossuth County Relay for LIfe.
Survivors are encouraged to submit a photo and 120 words of their journey to post on the Wall of Hope the night of the Relay. Any caregiver is welvome to post a photo on the Wall of Honor the night of the relay.

Angels among those at Relay for Life

For the past several years, the Whittemore Angels Among Us Relay for Life team has participated in the Kossuth County Relay for Life event. The group will continue to participate because it believes it is making a difference, and it is for a good cause.

Chamber rolls out first carnival at the corners

Those attending the Carnival at the Corners should expect plenty of entertainment.
"A lot of our events take place in the downtown area," said Algona Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Vicki Mallory. "The thought was to get a few new businesses involved with partnering with the chamber on doing some type of fun event that would draw people into town and hopefully the businesses can attract them to their stores."

Drainage dominates county board meeting

When the Kossuth County Board of Supervisors met May 21, drainage issues took over a large part of the discussion. A major discussion item stemmed from an issue with a drainage ditch shared between Iowa and Minnesota.
This ditch goes into Minnesota from Iowa and back into Iowa. Minnesota doesn't pay any tax on that drainage, and Jeff Eisenmann, Emily Eisenmann and Karen Farland all took issue with that.

Strohman honorary rider for BRAK

An avid bike rider, LeRoy Strohman has been named the honorary rider and starter for the fifth annual Bike Ride Around Kossuth County (BRAK) on Saturday, June 8. The Algona Rotary Club organizes the event.

Outdoor Cookin' with pie irons at the lake

Eat your dinner at Smith Lake on Friday, June 7, and learn to use pie irons as Kossuth County Conservation cooks up some pie iron pizzas and banana boats for dessert. The program begins at 5:30 p.m. and meets at the Smith Lake enclosed shelter house on the south side of the lake.
