Sister Marcine marks Diamond Jubilee

DUBUQUE—Sister Marcine (Jeannette) Kellner, a member of the Sisters of St. Francis of Dubuque, celebrated her Diamond Jubilee (60 years) on Sunday, Oct. 24, at Mount St. Francis Center, Dubuque. Cards will reach her at 3390 Windsor Ave., Dubuque, IA 52001. Sister Marcine was born on the family farm near St. Joseph on May 12, 1941, the oldest of the 14 children of Cyril Kellner and Adella (Hildman) Kellner. She entered Mount St. Francis in Dubuque and was received into the community Aug.

Benefits of restoring oxbows discussed in Lu Verne

LU VERNE—Iowa Learning Farms, in partnership with The Nature Conservancy and Boone River Watershed hosted an informational meeting on Wednesday, Nov.  10 at the community center in Lu Verne to highlight the restoration of oxbows on Iowa’s landscape to improve water quality and wildlife habitat. The event was free, open to the whole family and included a complimentary meal.

ALGONA—City Council members Monday night approved a change in Algona’s zoning ordinance, paving the way for a new business to go into operation.

AMU sets December hearings on budgets, communications rate

ALGONA—Rate changes are coming for customers of Algona Municipal Utilities (AMU) communication services.

During the AMU Board of Trustees meeting last week, a public hearing was set for Wednesday, Dec. 1, at 11 a.m. to hear input on the proposed rates. Details on what those will be are still being completed, according to John Bilsten, AMU’s general manager.

The Dec. 1 meeting also will include two public hearings dealing with budget matters.

Community Thanksgiving dinner returns – how you can help others

ALGONA—Thanksgiving is just around the corner. Plans are being finalized for the annual Algona Community Thanksgiving Dinner. This year there will be two options – either drive through pickup or home delivery. There will be no dine-in serving.

Drive Through pick up will begin at 11:30 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, Nov. 25, at the Divine Mercy Parish, St. Cecelia Church in the south parking lot.

Methodist event preps meals for use in Iowa, Haiti, Tanzania

Members of the First United Methodist Church in Algona, other community members and visitors from other communities participated in the church’s annual food packaging event Sunday afternoon, Nov. 14. 

Beans, dried vegetables, soy meal, rice, noodles and more were combined in packages and readied for distribution. 

Kossuth redistricting committee set to meet

ALGONA—The committee that will draw new precinct lines in Kossuth County will meet Monday, Nov. 22, at 3 p.m. at the courthouse.

The Iowa Legislature approved new Iowa House and Iowa Senate districts last month, and Gov. Kim Reynolds signed the matter into law. That started the clock for counties to begin setting precincts and in some counties drawing the borders for supervisors districts.

That’s only partly true for Kossuth County.

Supervisors allocate federal rescue plan funds, review pipeline agreement

ALGONA—The board of supervisors determined how to use the first $400,000-plus of Kossuth County’s anticipated $2.8 million in American Rescue Plan dollars. The county received its initial allocation of approximately $1.4 million last summer.

EMS struggles to find staff, cities OK ‘essential’ EMS

ALGONA—Kossuth County Emergency Medical Service is down to four paramedics and the search for new personnel is competing with other local, regional and statewide agencies who are facing shortages of their own.

Phil Albers, the Kossuth EMS director, told the board of supervisors last week that between the Algona and Swea City centers, the organization has three paramedics on duty each day. “That makes things pretty tight,” he said.

Lavon Lindhorst marks 100th

Lavon Lindhorst celebrated her l00th birthday with friends at Miller’s Restaurant.

Lavon Sankey Lindhorst is one of the oldest residents in Algona. She was born November 14, 1921, on a farm between Galbraith and Lu Verne. She attended country school in the area. Her parents sent her to Algona for her high school education where she has remained a resident for her life time.

Van Berkum named 1440 Citizen of Month

The Kossuth County Sheriff’s Office is honored to recognize Clifford Van Berkum of Swea City as the October 1440 Citizen of the Month. Van Berkum is currently enjoying retirement but has served his church and community for decades. As a former vo-ag instructor for Swea City (North Kossuth) High School, he has been involved in developing young area farmers throughout his career.

Local law enforcement involved in Thanksgiving STEP 

KOSSUTH COUNTY—Thanksgiving weekend starts in a week and a half, and millions of Americans will hit the roads, eager to spend time with family and friends. It is one of the busiest travel times of the year, and unfortunately, that may mean more crashes.

The Algona Police Department, Kossuth County Sheriff’s Office, Iowa State Patrol and several other law enforcement agencies will be out in force for a Special Traffic Enforcement Project, or STEP.

Senior center halts activities through Dec. 1

ALGONA—The Algona Senior Center announced last week that activities there are on hold for about another week.

“For precautionary reasons, we have decided to temporarily halt all activities except for room rental and meetings until the first of December,” a notice stated. 

Meals on Wheels will resume on a delivery-only basis starting Monday, Nov. 22, until Dec. 1. At that time, Meals on Wheels will resume as normal.
