Iowa spring turkey season about to begin

ALGONA—It happens each spring – Iowa’s timber echo with the sounds of male turkeys gobbling and preparing to do battle in an attempt to establish their territories in anticipation of the breeding season.  With each passing day, the competition gets fiercer, and hunters, more excited.

Fish Fry

A fish fry will be held on Friday, March 25, from 5 p.m. until the fish is gone at the Wesley Community Center. Proceeds will go toward the upkeep of the community center.

Nerem 100th

Ruth Nerem will celebrate her 100th birthday at an open house on Saturday, April 2 from 1:30 to 4 p.m. at the Lone Rock Legion Hall in Lone Rock. The celebration will be hosted by her children.

percent at Iowa State University

AMES—Three area students are ranked among the top 2 percent of students in their college at Iowa State University in Ames.

Birth Announcements

Jackson Cade Thul

Devin Thul and Destiny Smith of Algona announce the birth of their son, Jackson Cade, on March 15, 2022, at the Kossuth Regional Health Center. Jackson weighed 6 pounds, 12 ounces and was 19 inches long. Jackson is welcomed home by a sister, Scarlett.

Maternal grandparent is Dana Smith of Cedar Rapids. Paternal grandparents are Elizabeth Nichols of Seymour and Don and Michelle Thul of Algona.

Algona Brownies baseball premier ‘They Were Champions All’

 

 

ALGONA—Iowa Lakes Community College will offer a premiere showing of a documentary about the Algona Brownies baseball team, entitled “They Were Champions All,” on April 4, from 1 to 2 p.m. The showing of the 30-minute film will be followed by a question and answer session with two of the film’s three producers who will be on the Algona campus. This event is open to the public.

Garden Of Poets contest

ALGONA—Submit your original poem to the library for the Kossuth Garden of Poets poetry contest by March 31. The contest is open to all Kossuth County residents and students.

Divisions include adult, high school, middle school and grade school, with prizes for first, second and third in each division. Winners will be notified in April as a celebration of National Poetry Month.
