Iowans’ weeks of unemployment benefits would be reduced by bill

Iowans would collect 16, not 26, weeks of unemployment benefits in most circumstances under a bill the state House passed Wednesday.

Individuals laid off due to business closure when Iowa’s “off” indicator is in effect would receive 26 instead of 39 weeks of benefits.

Algona teenager killed in crash

DAKOTA CITY—The Iowa State Patrol reported it investigated a one-vehicle accident that resulted in the deaths of two teenagers. It occurred at 230th Street and Nevada Avenue just southeast of Dakota City at 6:19 Saturday morning.

Throwback: Pretty play

This week’s photo isn’t a mystery but maybe it will stir up some of your own childhood memories. And maybe you’ll recognize some of the names. Little folks dressed up just like grown ups to present the play “Tom Thumb’s Wedding” according to the newspaper archives from April 2, 1913, at the Call Opera House. The Congregational Ladies Aid Society directed the performance.

Hefty 80th

 

Kay Hefty will mark her 80th birthday on April 6. Her family is requesting a card shower in her honor. Cards will reach her if sent to 1801 110th St, Lu Verne, IA  50560.

Kay’s family includes husband, Ben Hefty; children: the late Blaine (Deb) Hefty, Brent (Corinna) Hefty, Jay (Lisa) Hefty; 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Jones 75th

 

Glenn and Faye Jones of Algona celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary on March 28. Their family is planning a card shower in their honor. Cards will reach them if sent to 520 S. Blackford St., Apartment 109, Algona, IA 50511.

Their  family includes Doug and Diana (Carmack) Jones of Sunset Hills, Mo.; Gary and Cindy (Merryman) Jones of Naperville, Ill.; five grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. 

Students  fighting for mental health

On March 24, AHS hosted a Mental Health Awareness Showcase. The students at AHS are aware of the importance of mental health and wanted to show their support by fundraising money with a silent auction and free will donation concert. The money raised was put into the mental health fund at the school to support students within the school. 

One to watch

ALGONA—As a sophomore at Algona High School, Seth Walker has already accomplished a lot in choir and drama and he’s just getting started. His most recent awards have been Outstanding Male Soloist at the Emmetsburg Extravaganza and Outstanding Male Soloist at the Spirit Lake “Shake the Lakes” Jazz and Show Choir competition where his jazz group Scarlet Midnight also won 1st place in the Class 3A Jazz Choir. The group sings everything from ballads to upbeat jazz.

Algona’s speech team has been very successful this year, and they had another good competition on Saturday, March 12. This competition was at Woodbury Central in Moville. This was an individual competition and everyone competing from AHS got Division I’s. 

$2,250 donated to food pantries

Even though the Kossuth County Farm Bureau’s Shopping Cart Race event was cancelled this year, $2,250 was still raised to benefit the Kossuth County Food Pantry in Algona and North Kossuth Food Pantry in Swea City.  

Businesses that gave donations were Corn & Soybean Growers, Northwest Bank, Iowa State Bank, Farm Credit Services of America, SteierAg, Tom Eischen Sales, Algona High FFA Chapter and Hy-Vee.

West Bend-Mallard FFA banquet held March 21

Recognition was given to several individuals for their contributions to the West Bend-Mallard High School FFA program during a banquet on March 21 at the school. RAGBRAI hits 3 towns in Kossuth

Riders will pedal through on July 27

 

Organizers of the Register’s Annual Bike Ride Across Iowa (RAGBRAI) announced that Algona will be a pass-through stop on the route this summer. Bicyclists will pedal from Emmetsburg to Mason City on July 27, with riders expected in Algona between the hours of 9 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Who are the real Superstars?

Superstars is an event held at Algona High School. It allows students to get involved and play games, competing with their classmates against other grades. Each grade wore a different color to represent their grade. Seniors wore black, juniors wore red, sophomores wore blue and freshmen wore white.

Students have fun with baking

In baking class with Mrs. Louwagie, the class has been learning to bake cakes. The first sweet treat that was made by the class was an angel food cake. The class worked really hard and they all turned out great. Morganne Cassens stated, “Baking class is pretty fun, I look forward to it.”

NCC All Conference Academic
