More than $4 million coming to Kossuth County from federal American Rescue Plan

ALGONA—Governments in Kossuth County are expected to receive more than $4.2 million from the $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan Act, which was passed by Congress in March and signed by President Joe Biden last week.

A polar vortex benefit - AMU electric customers will get a credit on their next bill

ALGONA—While February’s polar vortex resulted in higher electric bills for millions of Americans, it is going to save money for Algona Municipal Utilities (AMU) electric customers.
During a special meeting last Thursday, the AMU Board of Trustees agreed to an immediate credit of 3.25 cents per kilowatt hour for all electric customers in the March 2021 billing.

County regs for solar power in works

ALGONA—Ordinances regulating solar and wind power installations in Kossuth County are being addressed, and public hearings on future installations are scheduled for Tuesday, April 13, at 4:30 p.m.

$50,000 donated to Carnegie Centre

ALGONA—Pharmacists Mutual Insurance Group (PMI) and  the Pharmacists Mutual Employee Foundation, have pledged $50,000 toward the Carnegie Centre for the Arts project. 
Located in the heart of Algona, the 1904 Carnegie Library is being fully restored and repurposed to become a space to host art exhibits, receptions and corporate events, as well as a small music venue.

Petitioners ask supervisors to change ATV/UTV ordinance in Kossuth County

ALGONA—Kossuth County supervisors acknowledged receipt of a petition from about 80 county residents who want an update to the current county ordinance regarding the operation of ATVs and off-rode utility vehicles.
The petition was on the agenda at the board of supervisors meeting Tuesday morning, March 30.

SWCD kicks off 5-Year Planning

ALGONA—Construction of a five-year plan that addresses conservation concerns in the Kossuth County Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) began with a public hearing Friday, March 19. 

Vaccines available to individuals 18 and older; Safety practices still encouraged

Algona, Iowa, March 29, 2021 – Individuals age 18 and older are now eligible to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. To make a vaccine appointment contact the Kossuth County Call Center at 515-395-9111 on Tuesday, March 30 from 3 to 5 p.m. for the vaccine clinic on March 31 or call on Thursday, April 1 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to book appointments for the April 7 vaccine clinic.

Local woman lives near site of shootings

BOULDER, COLO.—Ten people, including one police officer, were killed by a gunman Monday, afternoon, March 22, in Boulder, Colo., during a shooting at a King Sooper’s grocery store. It’s a store near where 2011 Bishop Garrigan High School graduate Kelsie (Berke) Carlson and her husband, Rob, live just outside Boulder in Louisville, Colo.

6,000+ vaccines given here

ALGONA— Kossuth County vaccine providers have distributed a total of 6,162 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine, according to Iowa’s Coronavirus website (coronavirus.iowa.gov) as of Monday, March 22. 
This includes the completion of 2,026 first doses and 2,070 individuals who have received two doses to complete the vaccination.

ALGONA—Corey and Amanda Weig have been busy with renovations in their new restaurant location between McDonald’s and Pizza Ranch. 
“The outpouring of support from the community has been pretty amazing,” Amanda Weig said.

ALGONA—Scoutmaster Jack Hendricks received the Twin Lakes OA Leader of the Year award. OA (Order of the Arrow) is a part of the Scouts BSA honor camper society. Hendricks is the advisor for the Twin Lakes District comprised of five counties.

Board of Adjustment tables daycare permit

ALGONA—The Board of Adjustment Tuesday night tabled for two weeks a proposal for a special use permit for a daycare in downtown after concerns were raised about traffic flows and safety. A followup meeting is planned for Tuesday, April 6, at 6:15 p.m.

Vaccine Call Center open on March 18

ALGONA—The Kossuth County Vaccine Call Center will open on Thursday, March 18 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., scheduling appointments for a vaccine clinic on Wednesday, March 24. The Call Center phone number is 515-395-9111.

Library busy during relocation, reconstruction

ALGONA—The Algona Public library is not letting relocation due to reconstruction slow its service to the public. Several projects are in the works to keep the library staff and patrons busy.

100+ Women donates to Moving Vets Forward

ALGONA—John Emswiler, director for Moving Veteran’s forward was the recipient of a $13,000 grant from the 100+ Women Who Care of Kossuth County.

City alters rec staffing plan, wants to talk to Y

ALGONA—After 30 minutes of discussion, the Algona City Council Monday night voted to alter course in a staffing plan for the parks and recreation department. The council changed its mind on a decision it made the previous week after receiving a different idea from the city staff.
The council decided to reach out to the Algona Family YMCA to see about sharing programs in some manner, if possible.
