Idea for awning, changes on library project discussed

ALGONA—A bill, an idea for a new awning, change orders and other ideas to incorporate into the Algona Public Library renovation project were handled and/or discussed at the Algona City Council meeting Monday, April 19.
The council approved a payment of $218,462.93 to Henkel Construction for its most recent work on the facility. The balance to finish the project is $627,459.16.

Kossuth adults 50-50 on shots

KOSSUTH COUNTY—Thirty percent of Kossuth County residents, which means about 49 percent of the adults, have completed initial vaccinations against the COVID-19 coronavirus, but the process has slowed and public health officials are planning to adjust vaccination clinics soon.

Streets, airport, shelter house, party, appointment get council OK

ALGONA—Bids will be opened next Tuesday, April 27, on what could be $3 million in street and utility projects mostly serving the new industrial park and two blocks of South Moore Street.
At its meeting Monday, April 19, the Algona City Council acted on that project, an airport hangar extension, a design for a shelter house at Tietz Park and approved closing State Street for a celebration.

Council OK’s loading zone plan for daycare

ALGONA—The dream of two local women to open a daycare in downtown Algona moved closer to reality when the Algona City Council approved a loading zone and parking plan.
The action came at the council’s regular meeting Monday evening, April 19.

Dragotec USA enters its third decade

SENECA—Over two decades, Denny and Darlene Bollig have grown their family owned business to 30 employees and third place in the sales of corn heads behind John Deere and Case-IH. And it’s been done from their home base in rural western Kossuth County, a few miles north of Fenton.
U.S. Sen. Joni Ernst visited the Bollig family’s operation Wednesday, April 7, as part of her 99-county tour of Iowa this year.

Families of the Fallen hosting bags tournament, fun day of events

ALGONA— Families of the Fallen (FOTF) is hosting an all day bag tournament on Saturday, May 1, at the Train Wreck Winery. Registration will begin at 8 a.m. until 8:45 a.m. and games will begin at 9 a.m. Cost is $50 per two-person team.
In addition to the cornhole tournament there will be country music, food, drinks, giveaways and FOTF merchandise for sale.

Seed exchange a fun event for gardening enthusiasts

BURT—Around two dozen local gardening enthusiasts participated in a seed exchange on Monday, April 12, at the Burt Community Center. 
The event was held in partnership by the Burt Public Library and ISU Extension and Outreach of Kossuth County. Members of the Algona Area Garden Club assisted at the event.

ALGONA—The Algona High School spring play this year was a murder-mystery comedy called “Alibis,” written by Peter Kennedy. The play is based off the novel “The Murder of Roger Ackroyd,” by Agatha Christie.

Superstars returns to delight of AHS

ALGONA—Superstars at Algona High School is a big part of everyone’s high school experience. With a year off due to COVID-19, this year’s was better than ever. The seniors were excited, looking to finally place higher than third. This year was also different, as two grades, the freshmen and sophomores, had never participated in Superstars.

Changes coming for COVID-19 vaccine clinics: New location, online sign-up coming soon

ALGONA—Changes are underway for COVID-19 vaccine clinics in Kossuth County. Beginning in May, vaccine will be offered in a new location and online registration will soon be available for COVID-19 vaccine appointments.

DNR investigating fish kill and manure spill in Kossuth County

WEST BEND—The Iowa DNR responded Wednesday afternoon, April 14, to a manure spill in Lotts Creek, about two miles northeast of West Bend.
Precision Pumping, a commercial manure application company, was land applying manure through an umbilical rig when a hose came off the pump. The hose flopped into the creek and an estimated 10,000 gallons of manure spilled into the creek before the applicator could shut down the pump.

2 more virus deaths

ALGONA—Two more deaths have been recorded in Kossuth County due to the COVID-19 coronavirus.
According to the state’s website, the local death toll is now at 62. Fifty-four of the deaths were recorded with COVID-19 as the primary cause of death. The other eight cases had the coronavirus listed as a contributing factor.
