ACSD has successful job fair

ALGONA—ACSD its first job fair Monday, Aug. 2, in hopes of filling much needed positions before school starts. At Monday's Algona School Board meeting, Superintendent Joe Carter said the job fair was a great success resulting in several staff positions being filled including teacher associates, food service positions and substitute positions. More than 20 people were interviewed by the principals and food service director.

Council OK’s property code, reviews projects, hears from candidates for open seat

ALGONA—All that remains for a new property maintenance code to go into effect in Algona is publishing of the ordinance after the city council approved it at its meeting Monday afternoon.
The code section addresses requirements for property owners to maintain the structures and exteriors of their properties, and also addresses items such as pools. 

Supervisors rescind vote, go with low bid

ALGONA—After receiving input from its independent FEMA consultant, a state official who makes recommendations on FEMA projects and the county attorney, the Kossuth County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday reversed course on a repair project in Drainage District 4.

ALGONA—COVID-19 cases are climbing again in Kossuth County, and the discussion among the county’s elected officials and department heads in the board room of the courthouse Tuesday morning reflects issues being raised around the country.

Veterans race night, year five, is huge success

ALGONA—An event that started small has just simply blown up. Returning to the home of its beginning five years ago, Night #2 of the Hunting with Heroes Salute to Veterans Night at the Kossuth County Speedway on Thursday, July 29, was a smashing success.

KOSSUTH COUNTY FAIR PREVIEW: Countdown to the Fair

ALGONA—It’s almost here. In less than three days the Kossuth County Fairgrounds will be filled with 4-H’ers ready to showcase their fair entries. A lot of planning and hard work goes into each project and with last year’s fair taking on a unique look due to the pandemic, everyone is eager for the 2021 fair to begin.
Whether they are stepping into the show ring to exhibit an animal or conducting a working exhibit, there will be plenty of 4-H talent on display at this year’s fair.

ALGONA—The Kossuth County Fair will provide a wide variety of entertainment this year and some of it will be in front of the 90-year-old grandstand. How long a grandstand should survive will partially depend on how well it’s built and a 90-year run is a credit to the builders and the investors who wouldn’t settle for  anything mediocre.

EMS 'essential' vote will wait

ALGONA—Hopes for a quick vote to set up a county-wide emergency medical service (EMS) were dashed this week when it was determined it was impossible to meet the timelines to get a question on the election ballot this fall.

Supervisors to decide on DD 4 bid Aug. 3

ALGONA—After receiving input from the county attorney and their consultant for FEMA funding of drainage repairs at their meeting Tuesday morning, July 27, Kossuth County supervisors decided they will revisit bidding on a main ditch repair in Drainage District 4 in northern Kossuth County.
The county board plans to put an item on the agenda for the Tuesday, Aug. 3, meeting to consider rescinding or not rescinding the awarding of a bid to Reutzel Excavating on the project.

DOT plans work on U.S. 18 in 2022

ALGONA—The Iowa Department of Transportation’s (DOT) five-year plan includes an effort to improve a small section of U.S. Highway 18 in eastern Kossuth and western Hancock counties, the process of beginning to elevate the road to Super-2 status.

StoryWalk will read across the fair

ALGONA—-Iowa State University (ISU) Extension and Outreach in Kossuth County is inviting families to “Read Across the Kossuth County Fair” by participating in a StoryWalk. The StoryWalk, an outdoor reading experience, will take place from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on August 4-6 at the fairgrounds.
In June ISU Extension and Outreach hosted their first StoryWalk along Algona’s State Street. The event was successful and enjoyed by more than 20 families.

Student’s determination to honor vet leads to Hawaii

ALGONA—High school student Isabelle Gibbs and history teacher Brian Connick received a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Oahu, Hawaii through the National History Day Program. In Oahu, they learned about the culture of Hawaii and the role the island played in World War II, including the Pearl Harbor attacks. 

Iowa Lakes trustees visit Algona campus, Tietz Entrepreneurial Center

ALGONA—The Iowa Lakes Community College Board of Trustees received an update on the Tietz Entrepreneurial Center when it met Tuesday, July 20, on the Algona campus.  
Theresa Waechter, Algona campus supervisor, provided an update and introduced the employees. 

Algona school foundation raises $48,000

ALGONA—The Algona Community School Foundations annual golf outing and silent auction results showed once again what a special place Kossuth County is, organizers said. 
The event was held Tuesday, July 20, and it brought in $48,000 to the foundation, which uses the money to fund local scholarships and classroom enrichment activities. 
“The weather was great, the participation was excellent, and the results were phenomenal,” stated foundation consultant Barb Teeter.
