AAUW quizzes candidates at forum

ALGONA—Three candidates seeking to win the open at-large city council seat were put through their paces in a fast-paced, 48-minute forum hosted by the local chapter of the American Association of University Women.
Sarah Mayer and Carl Westling are challenging incumbent Brad Hoover for the seat. Hoover was appointed in August to fill a vacancy on the council. Early voting is underway at the county auditor’s office and polls will be open 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 2.
 

California family relocating to Whittemore to raise show pigs

WHITTEMORE—David and Tara Chadwick are in the process of moving to an acreage outside of Whittemore from Auburn, Calif., where they will be raising their registered purebred spotted show hogs.

‘Silent Night’ movie seeks local extras, donations

KOSSUTH COUNTY—The WWII home front drama set in late 1944, “Silent Night In Algona” (Inspired by true events) is now opening a public casting call for men, women and children of all ages.
The film, produced by Collective Development Inc. of Lansing, Mich., shoots Oct. 31 thru Nov. 19 in the Algona, Whittemore and Forest City areas. Shooting takes place Sundays through Fridays, with Saturday being an off day.

Autumnfest Craft Show draws 100 vendors

ALGONA—If you are looking for a large selection of quality handcrafted items, the Algona Autumnfest Craft and Vendor Show will be the place to be on Saturday, Oct. 23 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. One hundred booths featuring crafts and vendors will be set-up in three locations, Algona High School, Bishop Garrigan High School and the Columbia Events Center. In addition to the vendors, lunch will be served at all three locations in addition to a bake sale.

Showing pigs is a family effort for the Spears

Jaden Spear, Emma Spear and Coyer Spear all agree their favorite 4-H activity is showing pigs. The Spear siblings have been working with and showing pigs since they were old enough to walk in the ring by themselves and not lose the pig in the ring. The children of Mark and Mindi Spear of Algona, they are all members of the Lotts Creek Lads and Lassies 4-H Club.

Kuecker makes his mark showing swine at fairs

Caden Kuecker of rural Algona wanted to follow in the footsteps of his family and carry on the tradition of showing swine at shows and fairs. Kuecker has definitely already made his mark and the tradition is alive as he exhibited the grand champion market hog, grand champion pen of three and the reserve champion breeding gilt at the 2021 Kossuth County Fair.

Algona schools set committee for Lu Verne reorganization

ALGONA—The Algona School board met on Monday, Oct. 11, and finalized a reorganization committee for the Lu Verne and Algona school districts among other things.

Exceptional Dining Fun

Statues stand guard at Veterans Park

ALGONA—Two military statues, a man and a woman, stand guard at the entrance to Veterans Park. The plaque and statues were dedicated on Monday, Oct. 4 in recognition to the Kossuth County individuals who have served or are serving in the military.

100+ Women Who Care donation aides Project ASC

In August, Project ASC was selected to be the recipient of the 100+ Women Who Care donation. The donation of more than $13,000 will allow Project ASC to continue the mission of helping students and their families when they are in need. Julie Stein, AHS school counselor, commented specifically on the 100+ Women Who Care donation, stating, “It is wonderful to be part of such a caring, kind community.

Solid Gold marches at state Saturday

FORT DODGE—In early August the Bishop Garrigan Solid Gold Marching Band began practicing marching band music and marching techniques for the fall state marching band contest. 
The marching band will hope to give its best performance at the state marching band festival Saturday, Oct. 9 in Fort Dodge.

County proposes ATV/UTV ordinance change in line with petition

ALGONA—The board of supervisors will consider amending Kossuth County’s ATV/UTV ordinance later this month.
The board of supervisors will publish a notice regarding the proposed changes in the Oct. 14 edition of the Kossuth County Advance. The notice states the board will consider the ordinance at its Oct. 19 and Oct. 26 meetings, and if it is approved at each, the ordinance will be adopted.

AMU getting 45% of its electricity from wind

ALGONA—Forty-five percent of Algona Municipal Utilities’ (AMU) electricity is being generated by wind energy, and that’s “where we expect to be on a monthly basis,” said John Bilsten, AMU’s general manager.
The report was given during the utility board of trustees monthly meeting Wednesday, Sept. 29.

Bacha is new assistant police chief; ambulance purchase, sewer rates addressed by Algona Council

ALGONA—Marc Bacha has been named the Algona Police Department’s new assistant chief and began those duties Sunday, Oct. 3. The promotion was announced at Monday evening’s regular city council meeting by Chief Bo Miller. In other business, the ouncil started work on raising sewer rates and purchased a new ambulance. CALENDAR: Union Slough auto tour route open a week

UNION SLOUGH—Union Slough National Wildlife Refuge announced its auto tour route will be open from Saturday, Oct. 9, through Sunday, Oct. 17, in celebration of National Wildlife Refuge Week. 

WBM Diner a delicious learning activity

WEST BEND— West Bend-Mallard school opened its student run diner in 2014. The diner is run by Cassidy Peppmeier, family and consumer sciences teacher, and her senior students.
