AMES—Even while the weather is cold outside, it is still possible to enjoy fresh herbs for cooking. Taking advantage of a sunny window in your home can allow for herbs to thrive all year. 

In this article, Iowa State University Extension and Outreach horticulturists answer questions on how to grow herbs indoors.

Burt seeks proposals for possible water project

BURT—The city of Burt is requesting qualification based proposals from engineering firms for a project intending to seek funding under the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program through the Iowa Economic Development Authority (IEDA).

Titonka mayor resigning, council amends budget

TITONKA—Council members approved the mayor’s resignation and an amendment to the city’s budget during the regular Titonka City Council Thursday, Dec. 9.

Mayor Aaron Boyken submitted his resignation effective Dec. 22. The council voted unanimously to accept it. 

The council was forced to amend the current year’s budget because the water system improvement project was not included in the original budget. There was a public hearing prior to the approval.

Scarlett Ann McConnell

Clint and Collete (Haag) McConnell of Armstrong announce the birth of their daughter, Scarlett Ann, on Dec. 1, 2021, at the Kossuth Regional Health Center. Scarlett weighed 7 pounds and was 18 inches long. 

Maternal grandparents are Tom and Patti Haag of Ledyard. Paternal grandparents are Bob and Lisa McConnell of Armstrong.

Clint is a farmer. Collete is the CFO at Kossuth Regional Health Center.

Matz 50th Anniversary

Ronald and Judy Matz of Algona will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on Dec. 21. Their family is planning a card shower in their honor. Cards will reach them if sent to 1506 E. Nebraska St., Algona, IA 50511.

Sheriff charges man with multiple counts

WESLEY—A man faces multiple charges after being arrested by the Kossuth County Sheriff's Office.

Kossuth Compensation Board meets Dec. 14

The Kossuth County Compensation Board meets Tuesday, Dec. 14, at 5 p.m., in the board room at the courthouse in Algona.

The agenda includes reorganization of officers, presentation of information to the board members and a recommendation on elected officials salaries.

The meeting is open to the public.

 

Holmers enjoyed serving two different Algona congregations

ALGONA—At the end of December, Rev. Dr. Mark E. Holmer will be officially retiring for the second time. Holmer was of retirement age and all set to retire as the full-time pastor at First Lutheran Church in Algona in 2007 when an unexpected call came and his work serving a different congregation began part-time in Algona.

Algona POWs’ Nativity Scene open till Dec. 31

Valero gives $20,000 to local charities

LAKOTA—Valero’s Lakota Ethanol Plant will distribute $20,000 to local charities from funds raised through the Valero Texas Open (VTO) and Valero Benefit for Children (BFC). 

This year the tournament and associated events, including the BFC, raised more than $16 million in net proceeds for charitable organizations across the U.S., including those in the Lakota area. The tournament is ranked #1 in charitable giving on the PGA TOUR this year.  

Pediatric COVID-19 vaccine clinic here Dec. 13

ALGONA—Individuals seeking a COVID-19 vaccine for their child between the ages of 5 and 11 can go to Kossuth Regional Health Center Community Health during the walk-in pediatric vaccine clinic Monday, Dec. 13, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. No appointments are required. 

Drainage districts elect own trustees

ALGONA—Trustees have been elected to serve a pair of drainage districts in Kossuth County, relieving the board of supervisors from those responsibilities.

AMU cable, internet rates up

ALGONA—Cable and internet customers of Algona Municipal Utilities will see an increase in their rates after the start of the year.

At their meeting last Wednesday, Dec. 1, the utility’s trustees increased rates on its Dynamic TV by about 5 percent and its internet services.Residential telephone rates were unchanged, but there is a slight increase in commercial telephone rates. A public notice in this week’s Kossuth County has the resolution which outlines the price changes.
