Students at every grade level are beginning to advance along side technology as new games, resources and courses are being offered at the Algona Schools. 
Jackie Fonley, Algona Schools technology director, works to provide up-to-date technological resources to students and teachers within the Algona schools. 
Over the years, major changes in school technology have taken place. 

Shared curriculum director developing vision

LU VERNE — In her first year of a sharing arrangement as a curriculum director, Karen Sandberg is developing a vision of what teaching and learning should look like in the LuVerne Community School District.

County version of Antiques Roadshow held

ALGONA — In an effort to provide more information about the Kossuth County Historical Society Museum, a Kossuth County version of Antiques Roadshow was held on Tuesday, April 11, at the Kossuth County Ag and Motorsports Museum.
“I think it is entertaining for people interested in what people have from years ago,” said Jan Ricke, a member of the historical society. “A lot of them looking are wondering if their item is worth anything at all.”

Algona native named principal of the year

I was surprised and awestruck recalled Jim Murray upon being named the 2017 Iowa Elementary School Principal of the Year. Murray is an Algona native, currently serving as principal for Tifford Elementary School in Vinton.

Experiencing a ‘Life-Like’ drunk driving accident

The halls at Algona High School and Bishop Garrigan High School were filled with the living dead on Wednesday, April 5. 
As part of the Every 15 Minutes program, a two-day demonstration was held for both high schools. This program brings home the tragic effects of drunk driving accidents—claiming an average of one life every 15 minutes, and its domino affect to help students make good decisions.

Pulitzer Prize winner with area roots

Art Cullen, a man with deep Algona area roots and tenacity in journalism won the 2017 Pulitzer Prize for editorial writing on Monday, April 10. 
Spurred on by his desire for justice, Cullen began writing a series of editorials in the Storm Lake Times, badgering public officials into abiding the law by releasing public records of county donations. 

Benefit supports man with cancer

WHITTEMORE — Despite battling a rare form of kidney cancer, Royce said he felt “blessed” while standing in front of St. Michael’s Parish Center on Sunday morning talking and meeting with family and friends.
“It’s awesome,” he said. “It really makes you appreciated the small town. Everyone cares for each other and rallies together to help each other.”

WB-Mallard student dies in car crash

WEST BEND — A single vehicle rollover accident claimed the life of Hunter J. Origer, 17, of West Bend, on Wednesday, April 5.
“Hunter was a student with a lot of potential,” said West Bend-Mallard School District Superintendent Amanda Schmidt on Thursday morning. “He was kind to everyone that he met.”


50th anniversary
Ed and Judy Helmers were married on April 1, 1967 and will be celebrating their 50th anniversary this year. Their family, including Justin, Elizabeth, Kasjen, Jennetta and Aiden, are encouraging family and friends to give them well wishes.

Lamont & Judy Junkermeier were married on April 7, 1967 and will be celebrating their 50th anniversary this year. An open house is being held in their honor on Saturday, April 8, from 9 a.m. to Noon at the Buffalo Creek Activity Center in the Titonka School. They have requested no presents. 85th birthday
Irene Rosenstiel was born on April 10, 1932 and will be celebrating her 85th birthday this year. Her family, including her five children, eight grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild due in May, are encouraging family and friends to shower her with cards. 90th birthday
Bill Hellman was born on April 6, 1927 and will be celebrating his 90th birthday this year.

Taylor Olsen and Jessica Springer of Cylinder are the proud parents of a baby boy, Charlie Joshua, born Wednesday, March 22, at Palo Alto County Hospital in Emmetsburg. Charlie weighed 8 pounds, 10.5 ounces and was 24 inches long at birth.
