Crop Advantage series offered

AMES—The 2022 Crop Advantage meetings will give producers a solid foundation of current research-based crop production information to help make smart, informed decisions for their farming operation.

The meetings are an opportunity for farmers and crop advisers to hear current research and crop production information from Iowa State University Extension and Outreach. 

QPR training for agriculture professionals, producers set

ALGONA— Suicide is among the top five leading causes of death for Iowans between the ages of 10 and 54 years old. Additionally, over five times as many people died by suicide in 2019 than in alcohol related motor vehicle accidents - the most recent data suggests little to no improvement in suicide trends as Iowans continue to recover from the lasting effects of the pandemic.

Bishop Garrigan freshmen finish third in quiz bowl

Bishop Garrigan High School was one of 16 schools entered in the Spirit Lake Invitational Quiz Bowl Tournament on Saturday, Dec. 4.  The team of freshmen from left: Thadd Kollasch, Sam Greteman, Brooke Ludwig, Alaina Bormann and Molly Peterson made the playoffs and finished in third place in their division at the tournament. BGHS Dance Team excels at state

DES MOINES—Bishop Garrigan dance team earned first place in Class 1 Pom, second place in Class 1 Kick, and all three of the soloists placed in the top 10 in the Class 1 Solo division at the Iowa State Dance/Drill Team Association (ISDTA) State Dance Championships at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines on Dec. 1. The team was also awarded the Academic Achievement Award which is given to the top academic teams in the state. The BGHS team’s cumulative GPA is 3.91.

Stoney and Alissa (Zwiefel) Wagner of Algona announce the birth of their daughter, Stella James, on Nov. 24, 2021, at the Kossuth Regional Health Center. Stella weighed 7 pounds, 9 ounces and was 20 inches long. Maternal grandparents are Joel and Linda Zwiefel of Fenton. Paternal grandparents are Don and Melody Wagner of St. Joe.

Suspect charged, officer named in incident at Super 8, subsequent chase

DES MOINES—A man has been charged with three felonies and two misdemeanors following an incident Thanksgiving morning at the Super 8 in Algona.

The Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation was asked to handle the matter after an Algona police officer discharged a weapon during the event. The DCI has now released the following information:

ALGONA—City staff members have been given the go-ahead to get more detailed plans and cost estimates from the engineering firm Bolton and Menk for upgrades to Central Park and South Park – projects which could cost up to a million dollars.

POW camp finally gets a marker

ALGONA—The historical marker signifiing the location of Camp Algona, has been installed at the original site where the Algona airport is today. The project was completed in early November 2021.

UPDATED: Supervisors to oppose taking land for pipeline; county also looking into purchasing building in Algona

ALGONA—The Kossuth County supervisors plan to send correspondence to the Iowa Utilities Board (IUB), stating their opposing to the taking of land for construction of two carbon dioxide pipelines that are proposed to run through the county, and the county is also considering a purchase of a building in Algona for emergency management uses.

ALGONA— Jemma Vaske’s  family and Mandie Studer, founder of the non-profit organization, Pay it Forward Always, teamed up together to donate 62 Thirty -One bags filled with goodies for families staying at the Ronald McDonald House in Des Moines over Thanksgiving.

Renovated library  will  open Dec. 6

ALGONA—It’s been almost 17 months since the Algona Public Library staff and volunteers boxed up the entire operation and moved it to a temporary location so a massive renovation project could get underway. 

The interior renovations are complete, and at 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 6, the library will reopen at its permanent home at 210 N. Phillips St. 

The public is invited to stop and see the updated facility – and use its services.
