KRHC raises taxes to cover staffing expenses

ALGONA—The COVID-19 pandemic drove more traffic to Kossuth Regional Health Center (KRHC), but it also created higher expenses for the hospital – particularly for staffing – and those are going to at least partially recouped through higher property taxes.

Spring snow goose hunting season open through May 1

 

The snow goose migration is underway and with it, the opportunity for waterfowl hunters to participate in the special conservation order allowing hunting of light geese in Iowa through May 1.

While snow goose migration can be found across the state, it is more common to see the huge flocks passing through western and southwestern Iowa on their way to arctic Canada.

Take time to clean and inspect life jackets ahead of boating season

 

Surprising as it may seem, March is not a busy boating month in Iowa. But it is a good time to clean and inspect important boating equipment – life jackets – so its ready to go when the snow and ice finally disappear.

Susan Stocker, boating law administrator and education coordinator for the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, said it’s important to regularly examining life jackets for wear and tear.

Chamber Coffee at EXOP

The Algona Area Chamber of Commerce held their coffee at the Exceptional Opportunity main office in Algona last Friday. There are several job opportunities at EXOP for anyone who is interested in a rewarding career.

41 Blood donors, 24 first timers

The blood drive here at AHS was a huge success! There were a total of 41 donors, and 24 of them had never donated before. The blood donated will go to help save 102 lives! More than 3,000 units of blood are needed a week, and AHS has helped to contribute to this.

In global foods class, with Mrs. Louwagie, the class has been making some very good food recently. The point of the class is to learn different cultures and their food styles from all over the world. 

More wind towers to be erected

 

 

The Kossuth County Board of Supervisors was informed recently that NextEra Energy is planning to start the second phase of its Kossuth Wind Energy project southeast of Algona this spring. The company hopes to complete installation of 27 more towers by the end of this year.

Running for supervisor? Call the auditor's office pronto

ALGONA—In a press release issued Friday morning, March 4, the Kossuth County Auditor's Office stated, "There has been a change in signatures required for county supervisor candidates recommended by the Secretary of State. Anyone who is planning on running for Supervisor in Kossuth County needs to call the Auditor's office as soon as possible."

Holmes publishes second book

 

LU VERNE—Kossuth County native, Diane T. Holmes will speak about her journey as an author and her second book, “UPROOTED: Family Is Where You Find It”, at the Lu Verne Public Library on March 30 at 3:30 p.m.

BGHS drama presents Acting Can be Murder

ALGONA—Bishop Garrigan High School drama department will present the comedy-mystery, Acting Can be Murder, on Friday, March 18 and Saturday, March 19 at 7 p.m. in the Friedmann Auditorium at the high school in Algona. Tickets can be purchased at the door. All Bishop Garrigan students will be admitted free of charge. The play by Eddie McPherson is produced by special arrangement with Brooklyn Publishers, LLC.
