Area towns to be represented at concert, April 18

 ESTHERVILLE—The Northwest Iowa Concert Band, directed by Rich Nicklay, and the Northwest Iowa Jazz Band, directed by Scott Benjamin, will present a free concert, Monday, April 18, at 7:30 p.m. at the Estherville VFW. Towns represented in the concert include Algona, Armstrong, Estherville, Emmetsburg, Spirit Lake, Okoboji, Milford, Bode, Humboldt, Swea City, Wallingford and Ruthven. Members in the bands are from 14 cities, up to 70 miles away.

Child care important to families, business, community

ALGONA— “A lot of my families will check with me first when planning another baby to make sure I will have room for them,” said local child care provider Melissa Irmiter.

Megan Sabin, a manager at Pharmacists Mutual in Algona and a mother of three, said care is important to businesses who want to fill openings.

Who provides child care in Kossuth County area?

KOSSUTH COUNTY—There are options for day care in the Kossuth County area, but most of the available spots are full and operators as well as parents often say more access is needed.

Iowa has three types of child care; licensed centers, registered child development home providers and child care home providers that are not registered.

Chad Ahlers remembered through gift

ALGONAWhen former Algona High School coach and teacher Chad Ahlers passed away last year, there was an outpouring of respect for the contributions he made to the lives of many young people, particularly cross country and track athletes.

Kossuth County Community Foundation awards $149,678

KOSSUTH COUNTY—The Kossuth County Community Foundation (KCCF) held its 2022 grant awards celebration at the Algona Senior Center on March 30, announcing the distribution of $149,678 to 14 projects of local non-profit organizations serving Kossuth County through its 2022 grant cycle.

BGHS girls receive gift

On Monday, the Bishop Garrigan girls basketball team received a donation from Algona Publishing, presented by Greg Grabinowski, sports editor for the Kossuth County Advance. The girls also received personalized cups in honor of their first ever title as Iowa Class 1A Girls State Basketball Champions.

Struecker 90th

Willie Struecker will mark his 90th birthday on April 15. An open house in his honor will be held on Saturday, April 16 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Whittemore Legion.

The celebration will be hosted by his children. Cards will reach him if sent to P.O. Box 265, Whittemore, IA 50598

Drive-in theatre fun in West Bend

The 3 and 4 year old preschool students at West Bend-Mallard Schools attended a literacy and math drive-In theatre with their families in March. Students enjoyed a potluck meal provided by the families, rotated through literacy and math stations and ended the evening by sitting in their home made “box cars” as they listened to books being read by Stacie Stevensen from Iowa Public Television. Parents were encouraged to help their child create a box car for the family night. Mrs.

Creating mousetrap cars

Noah Gerber recently worked on creating a mousetrap car at West Bend-Mallard School. Students at WBM learned basic physics concepts and engineering while having fun building mousetrap cars. They competed for the fastest car and the farthest traveling car and voted for the most creative car at the annual Achievement Foundation dinner. Submitted photo

Last fish fry of season Friday

West Bend Knights of Columbus members will host their last fish fry of the season on Friday, April 8 from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at the West Bend Golf and Country Club. They served a total of 1,400 people at the fish frys on March 11 and March 25. Knight Bruce Helleseth said the fish frys receive great community support and the event features great food and is a good social time.

Women’s Networking 2022

More than 250 people filled the Columbia Events Center on Monday night for the 17th Women’s Networking Together event. Guest speakers  were top from left: Stacy Dodds, Carla Skow, Kristin Wadle and Kim Thilges who spoke on what makes someone beautiful and how women can share their own light with others and support each other. Bernie Merrill was the recipient of the Woman of the Year award and comedic, motivational speaker, Deadra Stanton, provided the entertainment.

Farm Bureau reps, AHS students visit capital

Kossuth County Farm Bureau board president Dean Berte and board member Jeff Schutjer attended Farm Bureau Day at the capital on March 23. Going with them to meet elected officials were Algona High School Government teacher Nathan Worsfold, and seven government students.
