The Camp Algona POW Museum reopened for the season on Saturday, April 5. The museum is open Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. for the remainder of the year.

RAGBRAI announces route through Kossuth County

The Kossuth County Secondary Road Department is making plans to ready roads for this year’s edition of the Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa, or RAGBRAI.

This year’s RAGBRAI route will pass through northern Kossuth County on Tuesday, July 22, on Day 3 of the bicycle ride. It’s part of the 73.9-mile leg from Estherville to Forest City.

Algona City Council approves sewer disconnection cost share program

Homeowners who disconnect illegal footing drains from the city sanitary sewer system may be eligible to receive money from the City of Algona to defray costs.

The Algona City Council on Monday, April 7, unanimously approved allocating $150,000 for the cost-share program. Described as a pilot program, the effort would pay up to 50 percent of eligible expenses for the disconnection with a limit of $2,500, for each disconnection.

Algona High School and Middle School Science Fair results

Forty-seven Algona high school and middle school students participated in the Western Iowa Science & Engineering Fair (WISEF) on March 15 at Buena Vista University in Storm Lake and the State Science Technology Fair of Iowa (SSTFI) on March 27 and 28 at Hilton Coliseum in Ames. They had great success and brought home many accolades, scholarships and placings. Co-sponsors of Algona HS and MS Science Fair are Megan Rasmussen and Holly Waltz.

Euchre results

The Euchre results for Tuesday, April 1 at Pep’s are:

First place - Chuck and Keith Kollasch with 62.

Second place - Wayne Patterson and George Bierstedt with 60.

Third place - Lamont Wagner and Bubba Peter with 59.

Most loners - Tie between Keith Kollasch and Bubba Peter with 6.

The door prize went to Doreen Koepke and Nick Ford.

Kids spa night

The Lu Verne Public Library had a kids spa night on March 22 complete with pedicures and manicures.

US farmers expect to plant more corn and less soybean acres

WASHINGTON – Producers surveyed across the United States intend to plant 95.3 million acres of corn in 2025, up 5% from last year, according to the Prospective Plantings report released today by USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS).

Iowa 4-H launches new statewide fishing club

AMES, Iowa – Iowa 4-H is launching a new statewide fishing club, designed for Iowa youth in grades 4-12. This immersive program aims to deepen participants’ understanding of aquatic life found in Iowa, focusing on topics like identifying common fish species, mastering safe catch-and-release techniques and learning the intricate art of lure tying.

Chris and Jenna Hansen of Burt announce the birth of their daughter Olivia on April 4, 2025 at the Kossuth Regional Health Center.

She weighed 6 pounds, 15 ounces and was 19.5 inches long.

Saturday, May 10 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the dumpster site at the Algona Aquatic Center. No unauthorized dumping outside of set hours for this event.

• $40 per load, small trailers, pick-ups, SUVs, vans and station wagons

• $75 per load, large trailers

If you need assistance, call Algona City Hall by noon on Friday, May 9 to schedule a time for Rotary Club volunteers to pick up items on Saturday morning.
