The proposed plan and how to pay for services

KOSSUTH COUNTY—Kossuth County will join several other Iowa counties this November in seeking essential service status for emergency medical service (EMS). The Kossuth County EMS Advisory Council has created a plan to address the needs of a county-wide system and the funds required to support it.

This year’s version of the Kossuth County Advance Progress Edition includes features on all 13 Advance Award winners. They are scattered among 46 pages and six separate sections. Santa for Seniors – Adopt a Senior

 

ALGONA—Year 2022 has been difficult for everyone, with things ever-changing. As the holiday season approaches, with the ongoing impact of COVID-19, it has brought even more isolation to seniors. They need support now more than ever. In some cases, seniors are living on a very limited income and may not be with their family at Christmas.

Gifts should be wrapped and ready to go when they are dropped off to one of the designated addresses:

A quasquicentennial fundraiser soup luncheon is set for Sunday, October 30 at the Buffalo Center Activity Center in Titonka. Free will donation serving chili, chicken noodle and cinnamon rolls.

Birth Announcements

Cora Lynn Buscher

Matt Buscher and Emerald Shipler of Algona announce the birth of their daughter, Cora Lynn, on October 21, 2022, at Kossuth Regional Health Center. She weighed 7 pounds, 15 ounces and was 19.5 inches long. Cora is welcomed home by a brother, Braxton Buscher and a sister, Aliyah Buscher.

Maternal grandparents are Chad and Molly Berte of Algona and Bobby and Jenna Shipler of Algona. Paternal grandparent is Liz Buscher of Algona.

 

Lone Rock Presbyterian plans dinner

 

LONE ROCK—The Lone Rock Presbyterian Church will host its annual harvest turkey dinner on Sunday, November 6 from 10:30 to 12:30 p.m. in its dining hall. A free-will donation will be accepted to help to defray the expenses of the meal consisting of roast turkey and traditional Thanksgiving side dishes including an array of desserts.

ALGONA—The Des Moines Register names Pharmacists Mutual Insurance Company a winner of the Iowa Pharmacists Mutual Insurance Company Top Workplaces 2022 award by Iowa Top Workplaces for the sixth consecutive year. The award is based solely on employee feedback gathered through a third-party survey administered by employee engagement technology partner Energage LLC.

Row crop harvest in Iowa remains ahead of average

DES MOINES—Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig has commented on the Iowa Crop Progress and Condition Report released by the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service. The report is released weekly April through November.

Cattle on Feed report released

DES MOINES—Cattle and calves on feed for the slaughter market in Iowa feedlots with a capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 600,000 head on October 1, according to the latest USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service -- Cattle on Feed report.

This was up 2 percent from September but unchanged from October 1, 2021. Iowa feedlots with a capacity of less than 1,000 head had 465,000 head on feed, down 3 percent from last month and down 5 percent from last year.

AMES—The 2023 garden calendar from Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, “Garden Lore,” is now available for gardeners and outdoors people alike.

Egg production down from last year

DES MOINES—Iowa egg production during September 2022 was 1.02 billion eggs, up 2 percent from last month but down 18 percent from last year, according to the latest Chickens and Eggs report from the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service.

The average number of all layers on hand during September 2022 was 40.1 million, up 3 percent from last month but down 18 percent from the same month last year.

Budget shortfalls challenge county-wide ambulance coverage

KOSSUTH COUNTY—The field of emergency medicine is facing a great challenge in Kossuth County and across the state: how to continue to provide timely ambulance service in the communities and rural corners of Iowa with fewer volunteers, a handful of staff and no sustainable source of funding.
