Private pesticide continuing instruction courses offered

ALGONA—Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Kossuth County office will be offering four opportunities to attend the Private Pesticide Applicator Continuing Instruction Course (P-CIC), led by Extension Field Agronomist, Gentry Sorenson.

Sessions in Kossuth County are scheduled for the following dates and times:

• Thursday, December 15, 9:30 a.m.: Trinity Life Center, 520 N Garfield St., Algona.

Community shows up big for food pantry

Despite the cold temperatures, the community showed up big time and donated approximately 11,000 pounds of non-perishable food items and toiletries and $44,496.50 in cash donations all for the Kossuth County Food Pantry.

Christy Peterson named new president of BGS

ALGONA—Christy (Mosbach) Peterson has been named the new president of Bishop Garrigan Schools effective July 1, 2023. Current BGHS President Lynn Miller announced his retirement plans earlier in 2022.  Miller’s last day as president will be June 30, 2023.

  The Iowa Mission of Mercy (IMOM) was held the weekend of November 4 and 5, in Des Moines. The Iowa Mission of Mercy is a large scale, two-day community dental clinic where dental professionals and general volunteers donate their time to provide free oral health care to individuals who face barriers to receiving dental care.

Bishop Garrigan dance team headed to state competition

DES MOINES—Dance teams from across the state will compete at the Iowa State Dance Team Championships on Nov. 30-Dec. 2 at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. This event is the country's largest high school dance team competition.

Bishop Garrigan’s dance team will be among the 255 dance teams and soloists to compete in a variety of different categories and styles throughout the three days of competition.

Kemco marks 45 years

Kemco Tire, Inc. in Algona marked 45 years in business in 2022. To mark the milestone, the Algona Area Chamber of Commerce weekly coffee was held at Kemco Tire on Friday, November 18. Above, current co-owner Dave Golwitzer (far right) introduced the Kemco employees and talked about the services the business offers. Golwitzer and Mary Bleich, Andrew Thilges and Sam Morz are all co-owners of Kemco Tire.

North Union elementary thanks all the veterans

The North Union Elementary students and staff honored local Veterans at a morning assembly on Friday, November 11 in Fenton. Rolls and coffee were served before the assembly to the community. Auxiliary members Mary Behrends from Lone Rock and Donna Jensen from Ringsted presented awards to the fifth grade students who all completed the essay “What the Flag Means to Me.”

Santa arrives in Fenton on Saturday, Dec. 10

FENTON—Santa Claus will be arriving by fire truck in Fenton on Saturday, December 10 at 1 p.m. He will be visiting children at the Legion building. Santa’s visit will be sponsored by the Fenton Community Club.

Kids will be treated to sacks of goodies from Santa. Members of the Fenton 4-H Club will provide crafts for the kids. Coffee, lemonade, cookies and bars will be served.

Algona community decks the halls with new Christmas decorations

 

ALGONA—The community will shine a little brighter this holiday season, with the addition of 60 new LED streetlight decorations purchased jointly by the City of Algona and Algona Municipal Utilities (AMU).

Kiwanis Christmasland prepares to open in Humboldt

 

HUMBOLDT—Christmasland in Humboldt will open for the holiday season Friday, Nov. 25. This marks the 40th year of this popular holiday attraction sponsored by the Humboldt/Dakota City Kiwanis Club. It has been visited by more than 150,000 people since its opening in 1981.

For 2022, there will be some new items and updates but lots of the traditional favorite scenes that people have come to know and enjoy year after year.

Sneak Peek of Art Exhibit

ALGONA—The Stinson Prairie Arts Council held a sneak peek reception of the Kossuth County Artist Exhibit last Thursday, November 17 at the Algona Publishing office.

The exhibit will be up until Dec. 6 and is free for public viewing during business hours. This year’s artists include Debra Arndorfer, Thomas Buscher, Danny Leblanc, Mindy Lichter, Catherine Rosengren, Evelyn Ruhnke, Anita Schultz, Jan Struecker, Julie Wagner and Tong Uk Yi.

Summit CO2 pipeline

 

The map at right accompanies the letter to the editor on page A8. Summit Carbon Solutions submitted the KMZ map with their Petition for Hazardous Liquid Pipeline Permit on Nov. 3 to the Iowa Utility Board (IUB). The map shows unsigned parcels that will require eminent domain highlighted in red. The IUB declined the filing as a final Exhibit H.

Christmas concert will feature Kossuth County residents

BRITT—Christmas is coming! This time of year brings many fond memories of family and Christmas traditions to mind.

An event in the area has a 47 year long tradition of bringing singers from Hancock and Kossuth Counties together. This year, the choir also welcomes singers from Butler and Cerro Gordo Counties.

“The Songs of Christmas” will be performed by The Hancock County Little Theater Choir on December 4 at 3 p.m. at the First Lutheran Church in Britt.
