Six AHS musicians named “ALL-STATE”

 

Six Algona High School musicians were selected through audition for membership in the Iowa Music Educators Association and the Iowa High School Music Association’s Annual All-State Band and Chorus on Saturday, Oct. 26 in Le Mars. The 77th annual Iowa All-State Music Festival will be held in Ames on Nov. 16-18.

Ukraine visitors discuss farming practices

Michael McNeill, owner of Ag Advisory Ltd., PhD agronomist, an agricultural consultant and owner of an organic grain farm recently hosted a meeting at the Ag and Motorsports museum with farmers from the Ukraine and farmers from Kossuth County to share ideas and knowledge about improving overall farming operations, maintaining healthy soil and ways it can benefit crops and our health.

Seniors provide fun for everyone

Members at the Algona Senior Center, dressed in their finest attire, paused for a photo before the fun began. They had trick-or-treat stations set up at the tables and game booths around the perimeter. Goodie bags, treats and refreshments were available whenever the kids needed a break.

Community invited to Civil War program in West Bend

WEST BEND—The West Bend Public Library will host O.J. Fargo on Monday, November 6 at 7 p.m. for a special program entitled “Just Before the Battle Mother - A Visit from a Civil War Soldier.” The presentation is free and open to the public.

After an overview of Iowa’s involvement in the Civil War, the audience is introduced to a returning Civil War soldier (played by Fargo).

West Bend library renovation

The West Bend Public Library is the recipient of a Palo Alto County Gaming Development Corporation Grant thanks to the West Bend Friends of the Library. The project is in progress, adding insulation and siding to three block walls. The main street facing side also is receiving a face-lift with matching siding and new brick. Submitted photo

Fun creating halloween homes

The West Bend Library hosted a No School Day activity on October 18. Students third through sixth grade were invited to play a game and earn "money" to buy building supplies for their Halloween homes.

Library staff said the students were more excited to eat their projects, but had fun making them too.

Haag farm designated Century Farm

DES MOINES—Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig, Iowa Farm Bureau Federation President Brent Johnson and Iowa Farm Bureau Federation Vice President Brian Feldpausch honored 398 Iowa farm families with Century or Heritage Farm designations at the Iowa State Fair in 2023.

The program celebrates farms that have been owned by the same families for 100 and 150 years, respectively.

AAUW presents “Latinas Find Success”

ALGONA—The public is invited to a program, sponsored by AAUW-Algona branch, in the fellowship hall of First United Methodist Church in Algona on Thursday, Nov. 9, at 7 p.m., The speaker, Jan Mitchell of Des Moines, will be featured on Zoom.

Field day will be held near Gilmore City

GILMORE CITY—Iowa Learning Farms, Iowa Nutrient Research Center, and Iowa Corn will host a cover crop, soil health and water quality field day near Gilmore City on Tuesday, November 16 from noon-2 p.m. at the Faith United Methodist Church.

The free event is open to farmers and landowners and includes a complimentary meal, though reservations are required to ensure adequate space and food.

DAR honors Veteran with remembrance project

ALGONA—Officers conducted chapter business including reports when the Algona Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution met on October 10 at the First United Methodist Church in Algona. Vice Regent Teri Miller presided over the meeting.

The Veteran Remembrance Project honors the military service of Veterans in Kossuth County. This list of Veteran funerals in September 2023 signifies a group of patriots who defended the country’s freedoms during their lifetime.

Audition times released for The Little Mermaid

ALGONA—Audition dates for the All Call Theatre’s production of The Little Mermaid are set for Saturday, Nov. 11 from 10 to 11 a.m. and Sunday, Nov. 12 from 5 to 6 p.m. at O.B. Laing Auditorium, 213 S. Harlan Street, in Algona. Actors need to be in third grade through high school to audition.

Show dates are Friday, Jan. 26 and Saturday, Jan. 27 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, Jan. 28 at 2 p.m. Performances will be at The Wilcox Performing Arts Center in Algona.

Historical Society asking for Santas for display

ALGONA—The Kossuth County Historical Society will have a Santa Claus is coming to town display at the historical museum this holiday season.

The society will be accepting people’s favorite Santas for the display from Nov. 13-17. Please call 515-320-0834 for a time to bring your Santa to the museum.

The display will be featured at the museum on Monday, Nov. 27 from 6:30-8 p.m.; Tuesday, Nov. 28 and Thurs., Nov. 30 from 1-4 p.m. and Saturday, Dec. 2. from 1-4 p.m.
