Back to School?

Work continues to develop a return-to-learn plan for the Algona Community School District (ACSD). It is due to the Iowa Department of Education July 1.
“This somewhat changes the way we teach kids. I think education will have some things that are different,” said Joe Carter, ACSD superintendent. “I think we’re going to realize different, effective ways to reach students.”

Relay for Life goes virtual, all June events suspended

Due to the COVID-19 coronavirus outbreak, the previously scheduled Relay for Life of Kossuth County event has been changed to a virtual online event June 12, according to a press release. Organizers are looking at a date in July for the in-person relay.
“During this difficult time, cancer won’t stop, and neither will we,” said Tina Coleman, senior Community Development manager for the American Cancer Society (ACS).

Algona City Hall, library, pool remain closed

The Algona swimming pool will remain closed until further notice.
The Algona Parks and Recreation Committee met before Monday’s Algona City Council meeting and made a recommendation to the council to keep the pool closed. “With all the requirements, we just feel we are unable to meet all the CDC requirements,” said Curt Wiseman, Algona city administrator on Tuesday, May 19.

Bancroft borrows money for street improvements

Bancroft will borrow $600,000 for street and storm work on Portland and Morehouse streets this summer. The city council approved borrowing at its May meeting.

Indian Days canceled, fall event possible

Titonka Indian Days 2020, which was scheduled for June 28-28, has been cancelled.Organizers hope to create additional events in late summer or early fall to make up for the loss of the annual celebration that brings people to town to enjoy time with those who live in the community.
Heather Brandt, treasurer for the Titonka Community Club, said the club hopes to discuss the possibilities at its June meeting.

Prayer service offers comfort to caregivers

It was a peaceful setting on the Accura Healthcare of Bancroft front lawn Thursday, May 14. With birds chirping in the background, two ministers provided words of wisdom and appreciation during a prayer and scripture service for employees of the facility.

Glass artist coming to Algona

Stinson Prairie Arts Council’s mission is to encourage and promote the awareness, appreciation, practice and performance of the arts in the region. Last year, we offered over a dozen different programs ranging from a concert by Tina Haase Findley to art shows by local artists and photographers. As 2020 rolled in, so did the virus, and many of our art shows and activities were canceled.

She’s ‘outstanding’ nurse at KRHC

To kick off National Hospital Week, Kossuth Regional Health Center honored an outstanding nurse with a surprise ceremony on Monday, May 11. Sandy Hoskins, R.N., in the KRHC clinic in Algona, was named the 2020 DAISY award winner.
KRHC administrator Dar Elbert presented the award to Hoskins and recognized all KRHC’s nurse nominees for 2020: Joan Wiemann, Anna Olson, Emily Erpelding and Ashley Thompson.

Health department identifies two more COVID-19 case in Kossuth County, total at 7

UPDATED: Wednesday afternoon, May 20, the Kossuth County Public Health Department identified two additional cases of COVID-19 in Kossuth County, bringing the total to 7. One of the new cases falls into the 18-40-year-old age group and the other falls into the 41-60-year-old age group; both are recovering at home.

Weathering the hog crisis

For 36 years, Kevin and Lisa Rasmussen, Hardy, have seen everything in the hog industry, but nothing like the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic that has made them change their operations and the way they think about the hog industry.
“We’ve been kicked in the teeth before,” Lisa said. “Okay, here is another one.”
Her husband Kevin added, “It is devastating. You don’t cry and complain. You get back up and figure out the next step.”

Primary election goal: Safety

The primary election in June is no longer only about selecting positions for the November general election. It is also about the safety of all involved in the election process due to the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic.
“The most important thing we are faced with today is that we want to maintain the health, safety and well-being of all of our citizens,” said Amber Garman, Kossuth County Auditor and Commissioner of Elections.

Many couldn't wait to hit the gym

Several club members at Anytime Fitness in Algona were ready for a workout when the facility opened on Friday, May 1.
“They were excited. They couldn’t wait,” said Katie Kuhn, manager at Anytime Fitness. “This club has good members and good camaraderie. Even though you have social distancing, people still miss the gym. I also think that maybe with this pandemic, people start to think, ‘I have to get healthier.’”

Ex-Algona man dies in prison

A former Algona resident, who spent 37 years living under a different identity before being captured and later convicted of murder, has died in prison in Florence, Ariz.
