Painting Algona Beautiful

One of the alleyways behind State Street businesses is being painted more beautiful.

Weeks ago, Mindy Lichter began the outline work for the ambitious mural project and has been hard at work ever since. All who have passed by since have been able to watch its rapid process as it continues to evolve.

Francis and Karol Bormann are celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary in 2018. Francis is celebrating his 80th birthday. 50th Anniversary

Bob and Jo (Meyer) Weber were married June 29, 1968 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Bancroft. They will celebrate their 50th anniversary this year. The couple resided in the rural Burt area their entire married life, which is where the still reside today. Jo worked at State Line Cooperative for 35 years, and Bob continues to farm. They are active members of St. John the Baptist Church in Bancroft.

Trial lawyers involved in own community service

The Carnegie building in Algona was the gathering place for 25 Iowa trial lawyers Thursday. The attorneys traded in suits and briefcases for hard hats and crowbars help the community start the renovations on the building.

A 'Go Be Kind' paint job for a faithful church member

ALGONA — Members of Algona Faith took the Go Be Kind! campaign to another level on Saturday, when at least 12 people scraped and painted the home of Carolyn Marshall.
“She loves God. She loves people. That is really the gospel boiled down,” said the Rev. Rob Thoreson. “It is nice to do something unexpected for somebody.”

EMS exercise includes real life events

ABATE FREEDOM PARK — When a mock training exercise was planned in October, none of the emergency responders participating expected as much as eight inches of water to hit the training area.
“With our real life event going on the same time we’re doing an exercise, it kind of throws another different angle into it,” said David Penton, Kossuth County Emergency Management Coordinator. “We have pulled out of exercise play and are doing the real stuff.”
 

Flooding causes road closures, basement sewage

WHITTEMORE — Josh Kramer was cleaning up his basement after it had been filled up with water just a day earlier. He stopped what he was doing and said, “This is a total disaster.”

ISU's solar car comes to Algona

Penny the solar car made a trip to Algona on Thursday, June 14. The car, formally named Penumbra, is a solar powered mode of transportation that was built by PrISUm, Iowa State University’s solar power car team.
 Adults and kids alike stood around the car, learning about how it works from members of the team.

Physician packing up his medicine bag

After almost 37 years, Dr. Kenton Moss will be packing up his medicine bag at the Algona Clinic.
Moss is retiring on June 29. He plans on spending three days a week supervising physician assistants, but also plans on doing some farming, flying, traveling and seeing his grandchildren.

One Last Ride...

The final Mindy’s Miles memorial bike ride was held in West Bend on Saturday, June 16 with record attendance.
For ten years, the family and friends of Mindy Bruellman and Chris Gearhart have gathered on the third Sunday of June to commemorate the two who were lost in a fatal car crash in 2008.
