DES MOINES—The Kossuth County Advance has some new hardware to display.

At the Iowa Newspaper Association’s annual convention on Thursday, Feb. 8, the Algona-based newspaper won three first place awards, two second place awards, a third place honor, and won the Best of Show for Advertising in the annual Better Newspaper Contest.

Reding-White

Jenna Reding and Dustin White will exchange marriage vows on August 31 in Des Moines.

Jenna is originally from Bode. She is the daughter of Jeff and Tami Reding of Bode. Her grandparents are John and Bertha Reding of Bode.

Dustin is originally from Algona. He is the son of Lisa Sarchet of Johnston, IA, and the late Johnny White.

Nearly 300 people attended the 9th annual father and daughter dance held at the Algona Family YMCA on Saturday, Feb. 10. The two hour event was hosted by YMCA staff. Julie Herbst-Ulmer, membership and marketing director at the YMCA, said the event has attracted more participants each year from all over the county.

FENTON—The North Union Elementary at Fenton has been raising funds for the American Heart Association for many years during February Heart Month. The leader of the activities is Hollie Anderson, P.E. teacher.

Goals are set before the event begins with stages of “rewards” during the two weeks of fundraising. The overall goal this year was set at $8,000, the highest amount ever set for the school.

A “love”ly time was held during the Valentine’s Day themed STEM session last week at the Fenton Public Library. The kids learned about chemical reactions and states of matter while painting puffy hearts and about molecule attraction while creating coffee filter flowers.

They also learned about how computers use binary code and then used binary code to spell out words using colored beads on heart shaped pipe cleaners.

BODE—On Tuesday, Feb. 13, the kindergarten and first grade students went to the Bode Post Office. Led by Ms. Karen Olsen, the children got an inside look at how the post office works.

They learned all about mailing letters and packages, including how to weigh them properly. The students also were brought up to date on the character of Mr. Zip, informally “Zippy”, whose job was to encourage the use of zip codes when it was implemented back in 1963.

The decision as to which farm program to sign up for is fast approaching as is the crop insurance deadline. They are both March 15 and one of the reasons is that they can be tied together.

AMES—The past year was one of transition and new beginnings for the Research and Demonstration Farms operated by Iowa State University.

At the leadership level, Kendall Lamkey was named research farms director and associate dean for facilities and operations for the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences in May. Lamkey’s appointment follows the retirement of director Mark Honeyman, who retired in 2022.

CLIVE—The Iowa Pork Producers Association (IPPA) maintains its commitment to fighting food insecurity by supporting local food pantries across the state with the Pork in the Pantry program. Recognizing the critical role that food pantries play in addressing hunger within communities, IPPA will reimburse county pork producer organizations up to $1,000 for pork products donated to food pantries in their counties.
