Earlier this month, the Algona City Council approved a resolution to add new bike lanes, signs and pavement markings on E. McGregor Street in Algona, from Highway 169 to Finn Drive.
Carey Kemna officially takes ownership of Algona dealership
In a significant moment for both the Kemna family and the Algona community, Carey Kemna officially signed the paperwork Aug. 20, becoming the new owner of Kemna Auto Center in Algona. This marks the continuation of a family legacy that has spanned generations in the automotive industry. Carey and his wife Amy are now passed down the torch becoming the Kemna family’s third generation owners.
It took some doing, but Kossuth County Emergency Management appears to be on track to receive all the county funding it requested this year. Previously, it was slated for a 75 percent reduction that agency officials maintained was against state law.
ALGONA—An award named for long-time Algona Community School Foundation board member, David Shumway, has been given to Liz Rosonke for her exemplary career as a teacher.

After a few delays, a funding increase for Kossuth County’s libraries once again is making progress.
A public hearing for a proposed budget amendment that includes an additional $188,245 in funding for the libraries will be held on Sept. 17. The library funding makes up the largest portion of the $299,517 amendment, which authorizes additional funding for the current fiscal year.
POW Museum director Brian Connick addressed the crowd gathered for the musueum’s open house on Wednesday, August 14.
The doors officially opened to the POW Museum 20 years ago last July. It started with an idea at a men’s coffee group that someone should do something to preserve the history of the German POW’s and the camp that was located in Algona. and has been growing ever since.

A large group of nearly 100 people joined the City of Algona and the Parks and Recreation Department for the Algona Area Chamber of Commerce ribbon-cutting at the Central Park Splash Pad on Friday, Aug. 23. The event celebrated the donors, contractors, city employees, council members, commission volunteers and other supporters who helped bring about the transformation of Algona’s most visible city park.
Algona City Hall and taxi services will be closed on Monday, September 2 in observance of Labor Day.

The Kossuth County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday, Aug. 20, passed a resolution closing 230th Avenue, which is a gravel road, between 170th and 180th streets. The motion passed unanimously.

He has made an impact in his community by going above and beyond both in his work and in his volunteer efforts.
The State experienced mostly dry weather this week. These conditions allowed Iowa farmers 6.4 days suitable for fieldwork during the week ending August 25, 2024, according to the USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service. Primary field activities continued to be cutting and baling hay and preparing for the fall harvest.
DES MOINES— The Algona Community School District is among the 137 participating school districts or schools to receive a $2,000 grant from the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship to purchase meat, eggs, produce, dairy and other local foods from area farmers. Launched in 2022, Local Food for Schools (LFS) pairs school lunch programs with a local food hub to connect to area farmers.
The Kossuth County Community Foundation (KCCF) will host two public grant workshops to discuss the KCCF’s 2024 grant cycle. Held on Thursday, Sept. 5 from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at Summit Center in Bancroft and on Wednesday, Sept. 11 from 12 to 1 p.m. online via Zoom, the workshops will cover the grant guidelines, budget template and application and will provide grant writing tips. There will also be time for Q&A.
