Crooks named AP All-American

AMES—For the first time in the school’s history, an Iowa State women’s freshman basketball player has earned AP All-America status.

That honor goes to former Bishop Garrigan standout Audi Crooks as on Wednesday morning, she was named to the AP All-America honorable mention list.

Creating mats to protect people from the elements

Late on a Wednesday afternoon at the Algona Methodist Church, volunteers of all ages are busy working on a mission project weaving plastic sacks on a handmade loom. What are they creating? Sleeping mats for those who don’t have beds and need barriers from the ground moisture.

“We are helping people sleep better at night. We have real beds, but they do not,” Emily Oldenkamp said.

Author dedicates book to local 5th grader

Local 5th grader Michael Ree has had a book dedicated to him by author Terri Schlichenmeyer. The name of the book is The Book of Facts and Trivia: American History which hit stores this past January. Schlichenmeyerwill make an appearance at Michael’s school on April 3 to talk to the students about her book. Schlichenmeyer is friends with Michael’s godmother who shared stories and videos of Michael and his love for reading which impressed and inspired Schlichenmeyer.

Dr. Condoleon leaving KRHC

ALGONA—Dr. Harry Condoleon will be resigning from his position as general surgeon effective April 30, 2024 at Kossuth Regional Health Center.

“We want to thank Dr. Condoleon for his many contributions and dedication to KRHC and his patients over the years,” KRHC CEO Dar Elbert said.

David Gisch is new academic dean at DMACC

WEST DES MOINES—Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) Math Professor David Gisch has been named the associate academic dean of sciences at DMACC. Gisch will finish out the academic year teaching mathematics before transitioning to the new position in May.

Algona music kids leave their mark on Nashville

AEA support transforms life for the Nelson Family

FENTON—The Nelson family credits the exceptional support provided by Area Education Agency (AEA) professionals for the remarkable progress and transformation in their son Silas' development journey.

Knights of Columbus #952 make donations

The Knights of Columbus #952 raised $2,660 for Annual Parish Families Against Hunger (P.F.A.H.) at a breakfast held on March 10. The Knights of Columbus Council # 952 and Divine Mercy Parish packaged food for their twin Parish in Haiti. They also had tip cups out on tables at all their events from March 2023 to March 2024. From these donations they raised $1,173 for P.F.A.H.

SPAC receives donations
Pedersen is 1440 citizen

The Kossuth County Sheriff’s Office is honored to recognize Beth Pedersen of Bancroft as the March 1440 Citizen of the Month. Pedersen is a kindergarten teacher at North Union Elementary and owner of the Bancroft Dance Academy.

Her nomination speaks of her service toward area children both as a teacher and dance instructor. “Beth shows these children the type of love that makes each and every one of them feel so special and that she truly cares about them”!

State FCCLA

The FCCLA group from AHS traveled to Cedar Rapids from Sunday, March 17, through Tuesday, March 19, for State FCCLA. The members who attended include Ashley Cantu, Abby Brooks, Sydney Seebecker, Maggie Wartick, Faith Zeller, Kaitlyn Burns, Lainey Venteicher, Caitlin Louscher, Hillary Holmes, Gabby Venteicher, and Sienna Fehr. The theme of the event this year was “Walk in Their Shoes,” focusing on childhood cancer.
