DES MOINES—When one talks about basketball tradition in Class 1A girls basketball, the name Newell-Fonda is the first name to appear as the blue-and-white has long state tourney history.
This year was the 16th state tournament appearance since 1995 as the squad earned their third straight title and fourth overall on Saturday, March 6 with a 66-52 over the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bears.
The Mustangs (26-1) built a 13-point first half lead only to see the black-and-gold (25-2) fight back and get within five points with 3:44 to play in the fourth quarter but two Golden Bear turnovers started an 8-0 Newell-Fonda run and the blue-and-white sank seven straight foul shots to seal the deal.
