Why I put up my Christmas tree a month ago

Our Christmas tree angel is a little tipsy. I’ll include a picture here so you know I speak the truth. It may be that she’s just tired of being on her perch for so long. Since Nov. 6 to be exact.

Two cannons

Letter to the Editor:

The picture of a WWI cannon on the Kossuth County court house lawn show an antique. There were two Cannons. One on each side of the large public bandstand. It was with a floor about four foot high. Concerts were twice each week. Many people came to hear them.

It is believed by many that the two already antique WWI cannons were sold to a collector and exist today.

Student loan debt

Dear Editor and people of Algona:

When the Federal Government started garnishment of student loans through the federal income tax system, this action would give the President of the United States the lawful right to forgive the loans, period. And anyone who was garnished qualifies for forgiveness.

‘Tis the season for coughs and colds

By Dr. John Schantzen

Family Physician

This time of year always seems to sneak up! It’s hard to believe Christmas is just a month away. This season I am excited to spend quality time with family, and am often left wondering when my children’s noses will stop running. Since the holidays and cold season tend to come hand in hand, let’s review how to treat colds with over-the-counter medicine and easy home remedies.

Queen Candidates At Lone Rock

The photo above shows Dolores Marlow, Joan Zwiefel, Helen Sprank, Marvel Schmidt, Kathryn Willrett and Helen Schmidt who competed for the title of Queen at the Lone Rock Carnival in 1947 mentioned in Gene Miller’s Out of the Past column at right. In looking through the newspaper archives after the event, there was no mention of who won. Does anyone know?

Do you see that dark spot near the top of the picture somewhere in this column? (I never know quite where pictures will land since the editor has to sandwich them between lines of prose. I’m so glad I don’t have to do that anymore!).

Veterans, young and old, need each other

By Shane Goodman

I attended a Memorial Day service at a local cemetery a few years ago. I was taking photos when an elderly man walked over to me and asked who I was. I told him my name and what I was doing, and he thanked me immensely for providing coverage of the event and the local veterans. I could see from the focus in his eyes and in the firmness of his handshake that he truly meant it.
