Capesius’ blasts lead BGHS to cross-town win

ALGONA—Abbie Capesius blasted a pair of long home runs to help the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bears softball team to a 6-4 victory on Thursday, July 1, over their cross-town rival, the Algona Bulldogs.
Capesius opened the game with a bang as she deposited the third pitch of the contest over the left field fence for an early 1-0 advantage for the black-and-gold.

Bulldogs walk way past Humboldt

ALGONA—Taking advantage of opportunities can be a big factor in the success of any athletic team. The Algona Bulldogs softball squad took advantage of one of those situations on Friday, June 11, in a 16-4, three-inning North Central Conference victory over the Humboldt Wildcats.

Golden Bears roll past West Bend-Mallard boys

GILMORE CITY—Bishop Garrigan pounded out 22 hits and rolled to a 23-0, five-inning non-conference baseball victory on Thursday, June 10, over the West Bend-Mallard Wolverines.
Both Garrett Heying and Drew Fogarty had three hits to lead the Golden Bears’ offense with one of Heying’s hits being a two-bagger while teammates Kyphus Goche, Isaiah Byrkeland, Jacob Leerar, Joey Trainer and Nathan Merron all contributed two singles.

Bulldogs fall in extra innings to Estherville-LC

ALGONA—Algona rallied late twice in the game to force extra innings but Estherville-Lincoln Central scored four times in the top of the eighth frame to pull out a 10-6 non-conference baseball victory on Thursday, June 10, over the red-and-black.
Jensen Eischen, Stren Crouch and Kyle Simpson each had a pair of singles to lead the 11-hit Algona attack. 
 

North Union wins 3 in tourney

SPIRIT LAKE—The North Union Warriors softball team won three more game on Saturday, June 12, at the Spirit Lake tournament. The green-black-and-silver started the day by rallying in the final inning for a 12-6 victory over Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley.
The Warriors trailed 6-5 going into the fifth inning, the final inning due to the time limit, but responded with seven runs to earn the come-from-behind 12-6 win.

Cougars rally for 4-3 win over WB-M

MANSON—Manson Northwest Webster scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning on Monday, June14 to rally for a 4-3 Twin Lakes Conference baseball victory over the West Bend-Mallard Wolverines.
Mitch Stevens and Cole Thilges each had three singles to lead the purple-and-gold at the plate as Nolan Ford contributed a pair of singles and Sam Fehr added one single.
 

Cougars defeat WB-M, 15-5

MANSON—Manson Northwest Webster scored in every inning but the first in a 15-5, five-inning Twin Lakes Conference softball win on Monday, June 14, over the West Bend-Mallard Wolverines.
Kylee Brosh led the Wolverines at the plate with a pair of singles along with one single each from Kylee Thilges, Kayla Hoskins and Shaylee Wise. 
 

Warriors fall in extra innings, 10-9

BRITT—It took an extra frame to decide a winner on Tuesday, June 8 in Top of Iowa Conference baseball game between the North Union Warriors and the West Hancock Eagles as the home team squeezed out a narrow 10-9 victory in eight innings.
The green-black-and-silver pounded out a season-high 12 hits in the loss as Evan Bollinger led the way with two singles and a double and Caden DeVary contributed three singles.

Golden Bears top West Hancock, 12-5

BRITT—Bishop Garrigan exploded for eight runs in the top of the sixth inning on Friday, June 11, to rally from a 5-4 deficit and went onto a 12-5 Top of Iowa Conference softball victory over the West Hancock Eagles.
The black-and-gold pounded out 13 hits in the win with both Abbie Capesius and Halle Menke leading the way with two singles and a double as Tara Kron added three singles.
 

Shryock double winner at speedway

ALGONA—Just four weeks into the 2021 racing season, a few drivers have been very dominant so far this season at the Kossuth County Speedway.
That trend continued on Thursday, June 10, as Kaytee Devries won her fourth feature of the year at the track, Alec Fett earned his sixth overall feature win of the season and the point leader in both the modified and stock car division Kelly Shryock, was a double winner.

Making a State-ment - BGHS girls run away with state golf championship

AMES—One word can define the 2021 season for the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bear girls’ golf team and that is dominant. The word was illustrated clearly on Tuesday, June 2 and Wednesday, June 3 as the black-and-gold lapped the Class 1A field at the state golf tournament to defend their state title.

No. 13 Warriors top BGHS, 4-0 in league play

ALGONA—North Union (No. 13, Class 2A) remained perfect in Top of Iowa Conference games on Friday, June 4 with a 14-0, six-inning win over the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bears.
The green-black-and-silver improved to 4-0 in the league and 6-1 overall on the year while the Golden Bears fell to 3-7 on the season and is now 1-3 in Top of Iowa Conference contests.

Fogarty pitches BGHS past Warriors

ALGONA—Drew Fogarty pitched seven solid innings and five players had at least two hits to lead the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bears baseball team to an 11-5 Top of Iowa Conference baseball victory on Friday, June 4 over the North Union Warriors.
The home team opened the game’s scoring in the bottom of the first inning as Garrett Heying belted a solo home run with one out. Fogarty then drew a base-on-balls and Collin Casey courtesy ran for the black-and-gold’s pitcher.
 

Wolverines shut out SE Valley 4-0

GOWRIE—West Bend-Mallard earned their third victory of the 2021 season on Monday, June 7 with a 4-0 shutout Twin Lakes Conference victory over the Southeast Valley Jaguars.
The purple-and-gold broke a scoreless 0-0 deadlock in the third inning with three runs and added a big insurance run in the top of the fourth frame. The Wolverines had seven hits in the win and played errorless baseball in the field.

Bulldogs split two Saturday contests

CHEROKEE—Algona split a pair of softball contests on Saturday, June 5 as the red-and-black outslugged Cherokee 22-17 before falling to eighth-ranked (Class 1A) Akron-Westfield by the score of 11-5.
In the high scoring opener, Emma Zabka had three hits while teammates Moriah Knapp, Lily Elsbecker and Olivia Rochleau all added two hits. Lillian Etherington homered and knocked four RBI as Brooklyn Helmers scored four times in the win.
 

Bulldogs earn win at Eagle Grove

EAGLE GROVE—Algona stepped outside of their North Central Conference baseball schedule on Thursday, June 3 with a road contest against former league foe Eagle Grove and came back to town with a 13-4 win over the Eagles.
