ALGONA — The Rev. Gerald Wingert, age 95 of Algona, passed away Thursday, June 15, 2017, at the Good Samaritan Society in Algona. 
Mass of the Christian Burial was held on Monday, June 19, 2017, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Wesley with Bishop R. Walker Nickless celebrating and nephew Rev. Tim Johnson homilist. 
Burial took place at St. Joseph Cemetery in Wesley. Visitation was held on Sunday, 5-7 p.m., at Lentz Funeral Home in Algona with at 5:30 p.m., Rosary and a 7 p.m., Scripture Service.
Rev. Gerald R. Wingert, the son of Lawrence and Mary Catherine (Thissen) Wingert, was born on Jan. 3, 1922 in Cresco. He graduated from Wesley Public High School in 1940. Rev. Gerald then attended Loras College in Dubuque for two years and continued to Trinity College in Sioux City finishing his college education at St. Paul Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota. 
On May 31, 1947, Rev. Gerald was ordained in Sioux City and held his first mass at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Wesley. From there Rev. Gerald presided at Remsen, Sheldon, Carroll, Struble, Maurice, Rolfe, Moville, Neptune, Auburn, Schaller, Mallard, Livermore and Auburn until his retirement on July 1, 1992. Rev. Gerald was a member of the Knights of Columbus Sheldon and St. Joe Council.
Left to cherish Rev. Gerald’s memory is his many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Tom, fraternal twins Clare and Louis, Michael and Lawrence and sisters, Jean Marie, Darlene, Eileen Johnson, Rita M. Shepard and Sister Mary Catherine Wingert.
Memorial contributions will be donated to the Deo Gracias Memorial Fund, Algona Good Samaritan Society. Memorials can be mailed to Algona Good Samaritan Society, 412 W Kennedy Street, Algona, IA 50511.
