Middles & Music Honor Band

Sixteen members of the Algona Middle School Band were selected to participate in the Middles & Music Honor Band, which was held at the South Hamilton Middle & High School on Saturday, February 1. These talented musicians had their performance resumes submitted by their teachers and the top students were chosen for the bands. The students spent the day in rehearsal in preparation for the evening concert.

Walker honored at 4-H 2025 Legacy Awards Gala

AMES — The Iowa 4-H Foundation is proud to announce the honorees to be recognized at the 10th Annual Iowa 4-H Legacy Awards Gala. The Legacy Awards celebrates Iowa 4-H and recognizes those who have made an important impact on the program. Slated for 6 p.m. Friday, Feb.  21 at Prairie Meadows in Altoona, this signature fundraising event will showcase Iowa 4-H and raise funds to support the program.

The ultimate leadership experience

The AHS FCCLA chapter has been doing great things for the school and community since fall. In November the FCCLA chapter made their annual apple pies and apple crisps for the school and community to buy for Thanksgiving. The chapter made 1100 dollars, which will help them pay for State FCCLA.

On Oct. 19, AHS Quiz Bowl went to Bishop Garrigan for a tournament. Algona teams placed 3rd and 4th, with the last round being the two Algona squads facing each other.

A bigger view on opportunities

At AHS, the family and consumer science teacher, Mrs. Louwagie, brings her students to a variety of field trips. Louwagie stated, “It’s so fun to have the chance to get out and get students real world experiences.” Louwagie has a variety of different classes that she teaches throughout the year and is always looking to find more opportunities for her students and the ability to broaden their horizons for creativity and opportunity.

United States cattle inventory down 1%

WASHINGTON, Jan. 31, 2025 – There were 86.7 million head of cattle and calves on U.S. farms as of Jan. 1, 2025, according to the Cattle report published today by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS).

Other key findings in the report were:

Of the 86.7 million head inventory, all cows and heifers that have calved totaled 37.2 million.

Euchre results

The Euchre results for Tuesday, Jan. 28 at Pep’s are:

First and second place tie - Wayne and Elaine Patterson and Eddie Rahe/Mary Alice Berte with 63.

Third place tie - Bill Farnham/Tom Fitzpatrick and Sharon Berte/Rebecca Bonnstetter with 61.

Most loners - Tie between Eddie Rahe and Elaine Patterson  with five.

The door prize went to Dean Frideres.

Abate Of Iowa Freedom Rally

ALGONA-—A.B.A.T.E. of Iowa is thrilled to announce the 41st Annual Freedom Rally, taking place at Freedom Park in Algona, Iowa, from July 3 to July 5, 2025. The Freedom Rally will feature big-name musicians along with a variety of activities over the three-day weekend, including mud wrestling, a tattoo contest, bike shows and rodeos, a burnout pit, fireworks, vendors and much more.
