YMCA Winter Wingding

On Saturday, Feb. 22, the Algona Family YMCA held their 4th Annual Winter Wingding at the Columbia Events Center with 205 in attendance. The 21+ event featured a meal by Kampen's Catering and open bar sponsored by Farmers State Bank. There were numerous activities attendees could choose to participate in. Just a few of those activities were a silent auction, various raffles, trivia and a wine pull sponsored by Iowa State Bank.

County considers changing parking ATV rules

Outdoor enthusiasts may be able to legally ride their ATVs in Kossuth County’s Parks. It was one of a handful of conservation-related ordinance changes being considered by the Kossuth County Board of Supervisors.

Artists see red

The Stinson Prairie Arts Council and the Haggard-Twogood Trust hosted a reception for their latest art exhibit on Sunday, Feb. 16 at the Algona Publishing Gallery. The theme for the exhibit was “I See Red.” This is the second themed show the arts council has produced. Twenty three artists exhibited one piece of art reflecting what the theme meant to them.

January egg production down 4 percent

United States egg production totaled 8.86 billion during January 2025, down 4 percent from last year. Production included 7.57 billion table eggs, and 1.30 billion hatching eggs, of which 1.20 billion were broiler-type and 100 million were egg-type. The total number of layers during January 2025 averaged 363 million, down 4 percent from last year. January egg production per 100 layers was 2,440 eggs, down slightly from January 2024.

The Algona FCCLA chapter celebrated National FCCLA week from February 10th through the 12th. Algona started their chapter in 2020 with 16 members. It has thrived since, now with a total of 25 members. Throughout the week, FCCLA did many activities and a fundraiser to celebrate.

The Euchre results for Tuesday, Feb. 18 at Pep’s are:

First place - Zach Keith and Landon Ludwig with 72.

Second place - Bob Haag and Charlie Scobba with 63.

Third place - Dean and Linda Frideres with 62.

Most loners - Landon Ludwig with six.

The door prize went to Doreen Koepke and Landon Ludwig.

Funding in jeopardy for C.A.R.E Team and Loving Hands Nursery

Loving Hands Nursery (LHN) is a no-cost, state-licensed, drop-in childcare center in Algona sponsored by the C.A.R.E. Team. Loving Hands serves children aged two weeks to five years, and is open to anyone in the surrounding communities. In addition to childcare, Loving Hands Nursery provides child development screenings and referrals for children who are not meeting milestones, and puts on regular parent education workshops.

Algona Family YMCA announces the retirement of CEO and interim transition plan

After nineteen years of dedicated service, Greg Bradley has announced his retirement from the role of Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Algona Family YMCA. We are grateful for the many contributions Greg has made to our Y and the community over the years. During Greg’s tenure, he oversaw the creation of the Childcare program and the addition of the Burlingame Aquatic Center. We wish Greg all the best in his next endeavors.
