100 years with Eleanor - Part 2

Part 2

Bud did come back from the war and Eleanor was so relieved. He had lived with his parents near Titonka when he left for the army, but while he was gone his parents moved to Burt. So when he did come home, it wasn’t to the home he knew. But, he was home.

So Bud bought a little house in Burt for $500. It wasn’t in great shape. He didn’t want to bring Eleanor there until he had it fixed up.

Armstrong Parish prepares for merger

Several county employees recently voiced concerns to the Board of Supervisors about the health insurance, employee pay and retention. Some also said they felt a lack of respect from the Board of Supervisors.

Algona Community Schools sets budget hearing

Officials with the Algona Community School District will hold the first public hearing for the proposed 2025-26 budget next month.

The public hearing for the 2025-26 budget will be held at 5 p.m., March 24 at Algona High School. It will be held during a special meeting, as required by law. Details of the proposed budget will be unveiled at the Board’s regular meeting on Monday, March 10.

 

A first for Algona 7th/8th grade band selected for state honor

The Algona 7th/8th Grade Band was selected as one of only two middle school bands in the state of Iowa to perform at the Iowa Bandmasters Association (IBA) Conference held at the Des Moines Marriott Downtown on May 15-17. The band submitted an audition recording in January and was selected through a blind audition process by a committee of band directors from around the state.

KRHC Auxiliary gives to KRHC lab

The KRHC Auxiliary has purchased two new phlebotomy blood draw chairs for the Lab Department. These upgraded chairs help improve patient care as they can be raised and lowered for patients with the touch of the hands-free, foot pedal controller. The extra-wide padded seat and backrest comfortably accommodate a majority of patients, and the dual padded flip armrests are adjustable to allow easy access to the chair.

Special Olympics is composed of events where students who have disabilities compete in different sports and activities. Last week AHS Special Olympic athletes traveled to Spirit Lake for the basketball skills competition. The skills they competed in included dribbling, shooting and passing.

Euchre results

The Euchre results for Tuesday, Feb. 4 at Pep’s are:

First place - Nolan and Amy Ford with 72.

Second place - Dean and Linda Frideres with 68.

Third place - Lyndon and Mary Fowler with 55.

Most loners - Tie between Bill Farnham and Nolan Ford with five.

The door prize went to Linda Frideres and Sandy Boekelman.

5th annual seed exchange to be held in Burt March 3

Join the Burt Public Library, ISU Extension and Outreach and Master Gardeners of Kossuth County for a seed exchange on Monday, March 3 from 6 to 7 p.m.

Bring any labeled and fresh, unique or heirloom seeds to swap, or just come for free seeds. Karen Pastori will also give a presentation on growing and cooking with fresh herbs.

Burt Public Library

Stephanie with Scents Handmade Home & Body gave instructions for a fun evening of candle making at the Burt Public Library. Participants were able to take home their heart-shaped candle. Auto adventure

Every year the AHS automotive teacher, Mr. Ricklefs, takes the seniors on an annual trip. The trip is designed to show what automotive careers are open for graduates after high school.

This year, 10 AHS seniors attended the trip. They toured John Deere in Des Moines. They also went to Ankeny to look at a car collection of a guy who collects and fixes cars.
