Algona's long goodbye with Kmart comes to an end this Sunday. The store will close with far less fanfare, I'm sure, than the day it opened way back when.
Kmart was an early leader in the mass-merchandise market. It took the small department store concept and put it in overdrive. Its blue light specials became famous or infamous, depending upon your point of view. And while it had low everyday prices, Walmart took that mantra and began using it to flog the competition despite the fact it often was an empty promise.
