Garrigan hands Warriors first loss

Lead Summary

Whitney Hovey’s lay-up with two seconds remaining help lead the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bear girls’ basketball squad to an exciting 43-42 Top of Iowa Conference victory in overtime.  The contest was played in Algona on Thursday, Jan. 12.
The green-black-and-silver led 42-41 with 10 seconds to play and missed the front end of one-and one free throw try.  Hovey grabbed the rebounded the miss and outleted the basketball to teammate Gracie Behr.
Behr hit Caitlin Thilges at mid-court and she hit a streaking Hovey going to the hoop for the winner, giving the 15th ranked Warriors its first loss of the season.
Samantha Hagedorn opened the game’s scoring with a three-pointer but the home team answered with five straight points to lead 5-3.  Breanna Anderson hit one of two foul shots before Gracie McGuire scored off an offensive rebound for the black-and-gold.
