Free throws determine winner in girls’ game

Lead Summary

When two good teams meet, sometimes the little things in a game decide the winner of the contest.  That was the case on Thursday, Dec. 21 at Bishop Garrigan as the Algona Bulldogs out-lasted the Golden Bears 59-54 in overtime.
The visitors connected on 7-of-10 free throws in the final two minutes of regulation and in overtime while the black-and-gold went 4-of-10 at the charity stripe during that span.
Three of those makes by the home team forced the overtime period as Kaylyn Meyers was fouled on a desperation heave from half-court at the buzzer at the end of regulation.
The talented Golden Bear freshmen calmly stepped up to charity stripe all by herself and with the Algona fans screaming loudly, drained all three foul shots without touching the rim to dead-lock the contest at 50-50.
But Abbey Holmes nailed a three-pointer in the first minute of the extra session to give the Bulldogs a 53-50 lead before Jenna Boelter answered immediately with a driving lay-up 10 seconds later to make the score 53-52.
