Frank Joseph Schemmel was born on Sept. 1, 1950, in Fort Dodge, the son of John and Lorraine (Hatten) Schemmel. In his younger years he attended St. John’s Catholic School but joined the Marines before graduating. While in the Marines he obtained his G.E.D. and took some college courses.
Frank began his career in the United States Marine Corps, enlisting in September 1967. He served in Vietnam from 1969 to 1970. During his remaining years in the Marines, he served as an administrative chief, career planner and drill instructor. Frank was honorably discharged as Master Sergeant in March 1989. After his military service, Frank was the records manager in Snohomish County, Washington until retiring to Bancroft in 1997.
On Feb. 14, 2010, he married Barbara Lallier in Bancroft. The couple made their home in Bancroft but enjoyed getting away by taking yearly vacations to warmer climates.
Frank was an active community member, although he hated attention and chose to share his talents behind the scene. Frank enjoyed the simple things in life including, spending time with family and friends, Busch Light, Jack Daniels, being outdoors, his dog CeCe and most of all his grandkids. Frank was a member of the American Legion Post No. 377 and started the Avenue of the Flags in Bancroft. He was also a member of the VFW, Disabled American Vets, a lifetime member of the Bancroft Historical Museum and a member of St. John’s Catholic Church.
Frank Schemmel, 66, of Bancroft, died Wednesday morning, March 8, 2017, at his home.
He is survived by his wife, Barb of Bancroft; step-children, Joe Shekey of Estherville, Kristi (Corey) Roberts of Algona, Derrick (Ashley) Frideres of Algona; siblings, Janet (Bob) Denbroeder of Elgin, Ill., Steve (Fatima) Schemmel of Algona, Dave Schemmel of Felch, Mich., Rich (Vickie) Schemmel of Flower Mount, Texas, Teri Schmeling of Emmetsburg; many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death are his parents; infant daughter, Laurie Elena Schemmel and his sister, Mary Lou Droessler.
