A funeral service for Evelyn Hunt, 92, of Algona, was held 10:30 Monday, March 13, 2017 at the First United Methodist Church in Algona with the Rev. Michael Orthel officiating. Burial was in Riverview Cemetery, Algona.
Evelyn Mae Butterfield was born on July 11, 1924, to Hugh and Mae Butterfield of Armstrong. The happy event took place at her grandparent’s home in Swea City. The oldest of three children, she and her family moved to Swea City when she was 3 or 4 years old. She was educated in Swea City, graduating from high school in 1942. While going to school, she worked at a produce business candeling eggs, lifting wood boxes of 30 dozen eggs, and testing cream that was removed from the milk by farmers before the truck picked up the milk at the farms.
On Oct. 22, 1943, Evelyn married Clarence E. Hunt in Swea City. While he was in the military in the Philippines, she and her family moved to Algona to buy and run the “Mainliner Café”. After Clarence was discharged from the army, they stayed in Algona and raised their four children, being very involved with all their different activities. She was a girl scout leader, she helped Clarence with boy scouts, and she was a Pink Lady volunteer at the hospital. She was a 50 plus year member of the First United Methodist Church where was in charge of the Quilting project, taught Sunday school, and helped prepare and serve the chicken and biscuit dinner at the fall Bazaars. She was also a member of the Rebecca Lodge and Royale Neighbors. While living in Swea City, after getting married, she was a member of the United Service Women a military organization like VFW or American Legion only smaller group.
Evelyn loved being surrounded by her family and friends. There are many “grown up kids” around yet who called her “mom”. She also let animals come to the “hunt haven.” Cats, dogs, rabbits, ducks, guinea pigs, hamsters, turtles, alligator, raccoon, squirrel, salamanders, frogs, snakes, two goats, a Shetland pony, naming just a few. Evelyn loved listening to music, watching baseball and movies, and watching Fox News. She also loved to quilt at home, embroider, crotchet, play cards, and visit with and help people.
