July 12, 1965 — Nov. 15, 2017
Funeral Mass for Dan Burns was celebrated on Monday, Nov. 20, 2017, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Cecelia Catholic Church with Father Laurence Burns officiating. Burial was at Calvary Cemetery.
Daniel Thomas Burns was born on July 12, 1965, the son of John R. and Mary (Goddard) Burns at St. Ann’s Hospital in Algona, Ia. He graduated from Bishop Garrigan High School, where he excelled in several sports and is among the career scoring leaders in basketball with nearly 1,000 points. He continued his basketball career and received his BA degree from Mount Marty College in Yankton, S.D.
In 1994, Dan moved back to Algona to work in the family business, Stueve Construction Co. He was mentored by his father, John, and had the opportunity to run the company with his brother, Jack. During Dan’s tenure, the company became a recognized leader in the United States in the construction of dry fertilizer storage facilities.
On April 1, 2005, Dan made the most important and best decision of his life, marrying Aicia Brincks. Together they created a family that Dan felt was his greatest accomplishment. The love he had for Aicia and their four children, Kaitlyn, Jillian, Jacob, and Luke, was beyond description. Any accomplishment Dan had in his life paled in comparison with the pride he had for his family.
Dan was a proud member of St. Cecelia Catholic Church. His faith gave him great strength during his most trying times. During his courageous battle with cancer, he was blessed to have a support system, which included Aicia, his mother, Mary, brother and sisters, in-laws and extended family, who battled with him every step of the way.
On Nov. 15, 2017, Daniel Thomas Burns passed away after a long and hard-fought battle with cancer. He passed peacefully at Kossuth Regional Health Center, under the expert care of Hospice of the Heartland.
Dan is survived by Aicia, his wife of 12 years, his children Kaitlyn (10), Jillian (9), Jacob (7), and Luke (4); his mother Mary of Algona; his siblings Mary (Steve) Hilbert of Livermore, Jack (Lori) Burns of Algona, Sheila (Doug) Boelter of Algona, Amy (Tom) Elsbecker of Algona; father-in-law and mothers-in-law, Duane & Ann Brincks of Algona and Mary Clark of Algona; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Erik (Natalie) Brincks, Nicki Burlage, Nate Taylor; 14 nieces and nephews and three great nieces and nephews, who lost the most loyal uncle in the world.
Dan was preceded in death by his father, John; grandparents; father-in-law, Steve Clark; several aunts, uncles and cousins.
