CORWITH — Connie L. Hunget age 82 of Corwith, died gracefully on Aug. 31, 2017, at her home, with family by her side. She will be cremated, with a memorial service held on Saturday, Sept. 23, 10:30 a.m., at the Corwith United Methodist Church. No visitation will be held. A celebration of her life will immediately follow at the Corwith Community Center. Private committal services will take place in Indianola, IA at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Corwith United Methodist Church and/or Corwith Public Library.
Connie was born Oct. 19, 1934, the only child of Virgil and Helen (Wagner) Lembke on a farm near Griswold and Carson. In 1939 she moved with her parents to a farm near Cumberland. She attended country school until she was in third grade. The family then moved into town and subsequently to an acreage near Cumberland. Connie graduated Cumberland High School in 1952, and went onto receive her B.A. in elementary education in June of 1956 from Simpson College in Indianola.
She married Phillip E. Hunget on Aug. 12, 1956, in the United Methodist Church in Cumberland. To this union was born two children: Todd in 1959, and Grant in 1962. After their marriage, they lived one year in Cedar Rapids and four years in Chelsea, before moving to Corwith in 1961.
Connie and Phil enjoyed traveling, taking seven trips to Europe from 1994 to 2001. Other trips included Alaska in 1995 and Hawaii in 2003 and 2008. When they were younger, they took many camping trips in the U.S. and Canada with the boys. They both also enjoyed Iowa Hawkeye basketball and football, where they were ticket takers at games from 2001 to 2010. Since Phil, her son Grant, grandson Steven, daughter in law Michelle, and granddaughter Mary were Barbershop & Sweet Adeline singers, she also attended many of their contests & shows throughout the U.S. and Canada. Other hobbies were reading, music and walking.
Connie was an elementary instructor for 34 years, teaching in Cedar Rapids 1956-57, Tama 1957-59 and Britt/West Hancock from 1969-2000. During these years, she earned additional credits from the University of Northern Iowa, University of South Dakota, Drake University and Morningside College. Upon retirement, she continued to substitute teach until 2010.
She was active in the Corwith United Methodist Church serving at various times as Sunday School teacher, Bible School teacher, and on Worship Committee, and as church finance secretary. She was the lay member to Annual Conference in Ames for several years.
She was a long time member of the church choir, and held various offices in the UMW organization and its circles. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, and held several offices in Chelsea and Corwith, including Worthy Matron in both chapters. She was a member of the Royal Neighbors of America, as well as the Pi Beta Phi social sorority at Simpson College.
Her parents Virgil and Helen Lembke; and Phil’s parents, Roscoe and Olive Hunget, preceded Connie in death.
Connie is survived by her husband Phil; son Todd of Mitchellville; Todd’s daughter Keely and husband, Nick, and their children Helen and Bruin, Broomfield Colo.; Todd’s daughter, Carly and husband, Wylie, and their children Owen and Reece, Cedar Rapids; son, Grant and wife, Michelle, Olathe Kan., and their children Steven Duncan, San Clemente, Calif., and daughter Mary Duncan, Lawrence, Kan.
