Bulldogs win regular season finale

Lead Summary

Algona went on the road to finish the 2017 regular season and came back home with a 12-8 non-conference baseball victory over the Spencer Tigers.
The two teams combined for 28 hits in the contest as the red-and-black led the way with 15, including five extra-base hits as Stein belted his third home run of the year along with a pair of doubles from Collin Sexton and one from both Trevor Bormann and Grant Goche.
The Bulldogs set the tone for the game early with four runs in the top of the first inning on an RBI single by Grant Goche and three-run home run by Nick Stein.
Spencer loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the first but Bryce Bradley recorded back-to-back strikeouts to keep the home team off the scoreboard.
The Tigers cut the lead in half in the second frame at 4-2 by scoring runs on a fielder’s choice and a double.  Both squads plated a single run in the third inning before Algona took control of the non-conference tilt with two runs in the fifth on three hits.
The purple-and-gold again loaded the bases in the fifth inning but a strikeout, a fielder’s choice and a groundout kept the score at 7-3 for the visitors.
Algona added three more in the sixth frame for a 10-3 advantage and the red-and-black tacked on two more tallies in the top of the seventh inning.
The Tigers scored five times in the bottom of the frame on three hits, a base-on-balls and pair of wild pitches to make the final score in the contest 12-8.
